The 40 ultron f mount has smoother bokeh than the septon, but still with a little bit of character. It's quite sharp too.
At f2 theres a strong central hotspot, distortion. I don't notice the hotspot at f2.8. The distagon 35/1.4 has the same thing and it can be nice for portraits with that one. I havent shot with this a tonne but i didnt love it to start off with. Felt it lacked transparency, something about the colours being a bit crunchy, the out of focus areas (not bokeh) and the hotspot + distortion. But it's quite sharp (compared to my other f mounts at least) and makes for some interesting shots. I think it can produce nice images with some colour editing.
The focus ring is so small on mine, but it works. Need to be careful not to touch the aperture ring as well as that's quite close too.
Mines the one just before this latest model (SL II n as opposed to SL II s). I got this version to use on the fm2n and was going for the smallest possible but i regret that a little bit now - though i havent held the newer one and it might make it over the threshold for comfortable carry once mounted on Sony.
On the other hand, and other than the CA, the nokton is a veeeery clean image and oozes transparency. The ultron images got cinched a bit, a bit seared, including the colour/tones - at least it feels that way to me. It can still take nice images but I wouldn't ever call it transparent. I checked centering and it was fine ... I suspect the septon might have a touch of it too, getting a whiff of it in some of the samples but I could also be talking out my butt and I don't think it's as bad in that regard from what I can tell so far.
Again, still very nice images possible with the ultron. Just rubs me the wrong way and quite often so far. Tones..colours..contrast..saturation... something. Wish I could tell you what it is exactly. I'm open to keep trying with it though and perhaps a lot of that can be overcome with editing the colours.
Nokton quite a bit heavier comparitvely (the smaller SE version, and even with the ultron on a metal mount adaptor) and sometimes the bokeh is a bit too clean.
For some reason the character lenses have peaked my interest recently. Perhaps because the noktons, distagon and apo already have me happy with those looks (for the most part - nothing is perfect for all situations). Considering both the 35/1.4 classic and this septon, though it might be a bit much.
TTA is nice too but I just enjoy manual focus more, less with people but still.

The focus ring is so small on mine, but it works. Need to be careful not to touch the aperture ring as well as that's quite close too.
Mines the one just before this latest model (SL II n as opposed to SL II s). I got this version to use on the fm2n and was going for the smallest possible but i regret that a little bit now - though i havent held the newer one.
On the other hand, and other than the CA, the nokton is a veeeery clean image and oozes transparency. The ultron images got cinched a bit, a bit seared, including the colour/tones - at least it feels that way to me. It can still take nice images but I wouldn't ever call it transparent. ... I suspect the septon might be similar in that regard, getting a whiff of it in some of the samples but I could also be talking out my butt.
Again, still very nice images possible with the ultron. Just rubs me the wrong way every now and then.
Nokton quite a bit heavier though (even the SE version, and even with the ultron on a metal mount adaptor) and sometimes the bokeh is a bit too clean.
For some reason the character lenses have peaked my interest recently. Perhaps because the noktons, distagon and apo already have me happy with those looks. Considering both the 35/1.4 classic and this septon.
TTA is nice too but I just enjoy manual focus more, less with people but still.

I remember when I first got it I was trying to figure out what made it look wrong and I did a some side-by-side comparisons and I can't explain why but it's just not clean like a nokton and it's not the bokeh. Just a bit funky. It might be that central hotspot, distortion and some other corrections and it looked better but still. Something a little off. Even the colours don't look right - not "full". My copy is centered well enough.
It can take nice images and it's sharp enough - just haven't been loving what I've been seeing so far.
I was using the ultron 40 adapted a little yesterday. I got some nice family snaps. The focus ring is just so small on mine, but it works. Need to be careful not to touch the aperture ring as well as that's quite close too.

The 40 ultron f mount has smoother bokeh with a little bit of character. It's quite sharp too.
Adapted it's not huge but my version is smaller than the new model and the focus ring is quite small on mine.
At f2 theres a strong central hotspot. I havent shot with it a tonne but i didnt love it to start off with. Felt it lacked transparency, something about the out of focus areas (not bokeh) but also just a bit off wide open sometimes. But it's quite sharp (compared to my other f mounts at least) and makes for some interesting shots.
I remember when I first got it I was trying to figure out what made it look wrong and I did a some side-by-side comparisons and I can't explain why but it's just not clean like a nokton and it's not the bokeh. Just a bit funky. It might be that central hotspot, the colour temperature and some other corrections and it looked better but still. Something a little off. Even the colours don't look right.
I got this version to use on the fm2n and was going for the smallest possible but i regret that a little bit now. Though i havent held the newer one. Mines the one just before this latest model (SL II n as opposed to SL II s).
On the other hand, and other than the CA, the nokton is a veeeery clean image and oozes transparency - like the images smell fresh. The ultron images got cinched a bit, a bit seared.
Nokton quite a bit heavier though (even the SE version and the ultron on a metal adaptor) and sometimes the bokeh is a bit too clean.
For some reason the character lenses have peaked my interest recently. Perhaps because the noktons, distagon and apo already have me happy with those looks. Considering both the 35/1.4 classic and this septon.
TTA is nice too but I just prefer manual focus.

It's probably not the case but it's almost like the colour or tonal range is more limited. There's something getting crunched, something missing. I checked it for decentering and it's fine.

--- it's not a good crop comparison here (understatement) but focus is on the "Made in USSR" on one of the lenses in the scene, left is ultron, both at f2.
Some of it is the central hotspot on the ultron, which you can fix with a preset doing a central radial mask and lowering the exposure, though sometimes it adds to the image, noticed that with the distagon 35/1.4 too. But it's not just that and I can't put my finger on it, not just the distortion.
I can (try to) do a more useful comparison scene or two if people are still interested in a few days.

It's probably not the case but it's almost like the colour or tonal range is more limited. There's something getting crunched, something missing. I checked it for decentering and it's fine.
On the other hand, other than the CA, the nokton is a veeeery clean image and oozes transparency - like the images smell fresh. The ultron images got cinched a bit, a bit seared.
For some reason the character lenses have peaked my interest recently. Perhaps because the noktons, distagon and apo already have me happy with those looks. Considering both the 35/1.4 classic and this septon.
TTA is nice too but I just prefer manual focus.
.
I can (try to) do a proper comparison scene or two if people are still interested in a few days.

Felt it lacked transparency, something about the out of focus areas (not boke) but also just a bit off wide open sometimes. But it's sharp and makes for some interesting shots in close range.
I was using the ultron 40 adapted a little yesterday. I got some nice family snaps. The the focus ring is just so small on mine. I got this version to use on the fm2n and was going for the smallest possible but i regret that a little bit now. Though i havent held the newer one. Mines the one just before this latest model (SL II n as opposed to SL II s).
I remember when I first got it I was trying to figure out what made it look wrong and I did a some side-by-side comparisons and I can't explain why but it's just not clean like a nokton and it's nothing to do with the bokeh. Just a bit funky. It might be that central hotspot, the colour temperature and some other corrections and it looked better but still.
It can take very nice images and it's sharp enough - just not what I love.

Adapted it's not huge but my version is smaller than the new model and the focus ring is quite small on mine.
At f2 theres a strong central hotspot. I havent shot with it a tonne but i didnt love it to start off with.
I remember when I first got it I did a some side-by-side comparisons and I can't explain why but it's just not clean like a nokton and it's nothing to do with the bokeh. Just a bit funky. Can take very nice images and it's sharp enough - just not what I love.
It's probably not the case but it's almost like the colour range is more limited. There's something getting crunched. I checked it for decentering and it's fine.
Other than the CA the nokton is a veeeery clean image, oozes transparency.
For some reason the character lenses have peaked my interest recently. Perhaps because the noktons, distagon and apo already have me happy with those looks.
