Well Nikon made their new 400 f/4.5S very small without PF optics, so I think a 500 f/5.6 (which has the same size entrance pupil) can be small too even without DO optics. It would have to be a little longer, but it could still be light.

Elsewhere the Fuji XF 500 f/5.6 is just $1,335g and the version of that lens covering medium format is only 40g heavier at 1,375g, so there is no reason that Canon couldn't make a lens that is that light. This would bring it in at very close to the weight and size of the RF 100-500L. In my estimation that would be a very compelling lens.
