So, after work, of course I rushed out to Kananaskis Country and found some Swainson's Hawks, Bighhorn, Moose, Coyote and Grizzly. It was an impressive bunch that came out to pose for the new lens.
I now have about 4000 pictures that I need to sort through. Life is tough.
Here are some of my better ones but expect to see more.
Great photos! I hope you had more than the 200-400 for protection. Looks like you were pretty close. Would like to hear how you like the 200-400 as I'm now torn between purchasing a super tele prime or go with the 200-400. Thanks for sharing.
These look great, although the looks you're getting in #2 and 3 is a bit scary... Guess they're going to tell everyone...Hey watch out, Scott's got a new lens Enjoy the new equipment.
dhb820: I had my charm for protection. I can tell you from experience that bear spray requires alarming speed of use so caution is better. The 200-400 is really nice. My observations:
1) As heavy as the 600 v2
2) Much smaller than the 600 v2 or even my 500 v1 - you can change direction in my jeep without hitting the window.
3) Switching back and forth between 1x and 1.4x is dream easy
4) Zooming with one hand on lens to support and one to shutter means its difficult to zoom but doable. Stiff though.
5) If you look on lensrentals.com or thedigitalpicture, you will find that for static picturers it is as good as the 400 f2.8 II and with the 1.4x it is as good as the 600 with 1.4xIII- which is very good.
6) So as long as you can handhold it - it is a fantastic lens so far.
7) My 5diii and 200-400 vs 5dii with 100-400 seemed like 100-400 was looking through the tunnel because the 200-400 was so much brighter.
8) My 600v2 on 7d felt way safer and put way less pressure on the bears.
I think that this lens is a really good all purpose lens that for someone on a budget, would replace 600v2 but if your goal is birds get the 500 vii or 600 vii.
JimLittle: 3 grizzly cubs with a mom plus a new lens- I was on cloud 9. Thanks Scott
G.E. Smith: Glad you like the bears and the 200-400 results. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
B Benson: I was lucky on two fronts yesterday - lens and bears. Glad you like them. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
Tim Kuhn: = Me!!! It was a fantastic day. Much appreciated. Scott
Guari: Some of them are 200mm at f4 - I was risking my life to test the lens for you. So 75' but they approached me not they other way around and they did not seem stressed. They were aware but not too concerned. Much appreciated. Scott
KCollett: Its my lot in life - no one trusts me. Glad you like them. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
ScottHM: The little bears were braver further away but the mom was braver close up. They were coming toward me and I stayed as they got closer. Glad you like them. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
mpoole: There were some chinese tourist girls next to me for a while and they had perfume on and were too far from their car (my door was open and close) and their car was closer to the bear. I told them they should move their car up but they ignored me. So then I just took advantage of the smell they were putting off making the bears stand. Glad you like the series and the lens images. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
OwlsEyes: Glad you like the images and the lens. Hopefully it will be a fruitfull summer. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
Frogfish: They were watching me. I think the lens was making them nervous because the parks tried to scare them off with bear bangers. Glad you like them. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
kmunroe: Glad you like the bears. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
David Leask: Glad you like the shots. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
