Your work is an attention magnet for me everytime I see your byline. This is no exception. I do however have a moderate preference for some blurred details in the backgrounds of your shots. It makes me aware of my envy of your technique, an the cojones it must take to approach strangers on the street and persuade them to strike a pose for you.
Muttering another envious "Bravo!",

Thank you, xerofun (no fun?).

Cal, thanks SO much, I am blushing. As for cojones, it's like anything else in life. It is VERY intimidating at first, but after practice it's no big deal. Usually.

Hi Bob,

I, too, have been following most all of your posts for some time. Your technique has the appearance of something that is easily accomplished for you. I'm guessing that it is not quite as elementary as you make it seem.

This portrait is really great for me. I like the detail and the expression.

Could you elaborate on your typical equipment, lighting, and way of approaching your subject?

Kind Regards,
Scott

Thank you for the encouragement, Scott. Coincidentally, my blog post for today has to do with finding good light for street portraits.

http://deinfaces.com/blog/

As for gear, I keep it (very) simple. For a couple of years I used a Nikon D90 with a prime 50 or 85mm lens set at f 2.4 or 2.8. I have switched to Olympus OM-D (2X crop) with a 45mm f1.8, shot wide open.

I'll do another blog post (probably Thursday) about approaching people. If you're interested, check this flickr site. There are lots of strings about the challenges of approaching people.

Bob- Your caption escapes me completely .
But I really like the shot.
(Assuming he's a stranger to you), I really like the look he gave you: the man-boy cockiness of the head tilted back AND to the side, plus him trying to grow a beard where few hairs actually grow.
You caught a good combination of stuff here.

I agree with Charlie. The expression that you captured is what makes the picture interesting for me. Thanks again for the direction to your blog. I'd been there once before, but only to look at the portraits. I'd never actually clicked on "blog." I see that it will most likely answer most of my questions.

Thanks again,
Scott
