This is the officer who has been my boss for the past year and a half. She's been a great leader and taken care of me and mine. This was her last day. I'm attempting to balance professionalism/heroism/leadership and femininity. These shots are a sort of a hybrid between formal portraiture and more personality driven work: shots that maintain a sense of decorum for the uniform, but nonetheless demonstrate personality.
This portrait is near perfection with your choice of overall placement of the subject, posing, lighting, separation from the background, personality, and decorum. Great job!

Tell me please did you use a background light on this one or did you manage to create the nice gradient in PP ?

*Note the subject is quite far from the background to decrease the effect of the key on the gradient

A very successful portrait, Evan- and I really like it.
You've got an excellent series going- and this is a worthy addition to it.
Not so sure about the color in the background- but that's just an imo.

I admire the lighting in this one, especially the background separation achieved. The warm smile does bright out the personality of the lady, just as you wanted. Pose is well done too - just enough to see the ribbons and the front of the tunic.
She's gotta be happy with this shot and so should you.
I think BW is the way to go here (give the series and your intentions to create a "classic" look), but I would be curious to see a color version as well. I get you'd get some really nice painterly tones in a color version of this shot.
This is just a quick LR preset on it, not a thorough edit... but it will give you the idea.
I chose BW for the series not even so much for the "classic" look (I deliberately want to avoid being self-consciously "retro") but because I feel it mitigates the eye-catching quality of the awards and decorations. We have DA photos (and frequently, upon retiring, showcases and the like) to serve the purpose of "showcasing the awards," so I don't feel that these shots need to be about drawing the eye there. Notice in the color version how your eye is slightly more drawn to the rank, the ribbons, and so on, while the BW version is more about her expression. These portraits are about the person, and the uniform is an important part of that, but it is not about the uniform.
