p.3 #1 · Milky Way watching over the Bristlecone

Thank you all for the continued comments!

Thank you! I was there a couple of year ago and the visitor center was closed (I think they were fixing the place) and the whole access to it was also closed. I took a few shots but trees in front of it, right next to the road so nothing special. I'll be there in two or three weeks. This is only 4 hours drive for me. I should've been there 10 times already But, sometimes you gotta get inspired and your shot did just that.

I think they actually had a fire at the visitor center which closed it for a while. You can actually access this tree by driving just past the visitor center (down the dirt road) and the tree will be up on the rock hill to your right. I actually scrambled up the hill one time but the loose rocks aren't that much fun. Just enjoy your trip and don't hesitate to ask any other questions!

Yes, great fantastic neat shot, well done, i am sure you will do a lot also with a beloved lens, TS-E 24II.

I have only one question, what kind or which model of LED light did you use for FG light paining?

Hopefully I'll get something useful from the TSE but I need to figure it out first! I'll get a good crash course this weekend as I fumble around with it. As for the LED, I used one of the rechargeable wands such as:
http://www.harborfreight.com/rechargeable-led-work-light-with-magnetic-base-94668.html

I've found these give off a better diffused light rather than a single LED headlamp and/or spotlight. Amazon has a bunch of different ones as well. Hope that helps!

Bravo sir! I noticed that you're from the rainy state. I was stationed in Joint Base Lewis McChord for a few years and just left early this year. I miss Washington state. Even though it rained a lot, I still had so much fun there. Would definitely go back again, maybe even retire there.

Hmmmm, not sure if i will buy this one, but i will keep looking at similar performance-wise LED lights and see which i will get.

Well, i didn't test my TS lenses much, but i really like shift option more than tilt, tilt is mostly for that miniature effect or increase sharpness DOF which is opposite of miniature, but i really don't know if it is the one for make lines straight, but shift, wow, it is like making me taking multiple shots for 1 single shot, great pano and easy.

I can't wait to see your wonders with this lens, and i hope to have some nice results from my trip soon i hope.

Keep up your amazing works Rick.

You will love Crater Lake, it is a fantastic place to do night shots. Of course it is beautiful during the day as well.

A big congrats for the win!!!

Now, at the risk of being honest I'll first say I really like the shot (how can you not?) but I am a little weary of the hyper star shots on the forums today. I know they are immensely popular (just look at what is popular on 500px). But I'd love to see the exact same shot just a tad more tame. I also find it interesting that someone like "Chez" who seems to make a habit of repetitively specifically critiquing my shots as "not natural" is raving here. Is this natural? Is photography natural? No, it is ART as it should be. I am no literalist, and never will be, and really honestly like the shot a lot, but if it was mine I'd be tempted to go with just a little more naturalist rendering. Just my 2 cents.

I really appreciate the comments guys!

Jim, it is definitely the WA distortion as this had to be shot from a low angle. I tried playing around with some of the perspective control in CS6 but nothing looked "right" to me so I left it as-is. But I am convinced that a tilt-shift lens may help so I'm picking up a 24mm TS-E today. Looking forward to shoot more night stuff next weekend!

I like the shot as is. Yes you could have levelled the camera and used a TS lens to get a similar composition but that would have changed the shot quite a bit. The way you didi it makes it more dramatic since it exaggerates the effect of one looking up at the tree and stars.

The technique is spot on in regards to the image blend and also the light painting (which is easy to overdo).

You can always take several different foreground shots and just blend in the shot of the stars.

Very nice indeed. About the technique; this is two photos? Did you first shoot the tree then go behind the tree and use your SkyTracker to shoot the sky? Then blend in post? How difficult must it have been to blend the two with the detailed branches etc.

If anyone knows of a similar workflow (online) I'd be interested in reading up on this.

Great work, Rick.
