Congratulations to gordon l for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 4 votes - View Previous Winners
Hello Forum,
This is now the 8th installment of a project I began years ago. I visit southwest Montana each year for one week. Each years looks different depending on how much rain/snow they've had and how early/late in the summer I go. This lonely cabin sits in a big valley and I've taken to shooting it each year. Sometimes I try sunset, others at sunrise, others with different lenses, etc -- I want to get something NEW each year.
This year the lupine wildflowers were out in force. That's very exciting! I actually got TWO shots I really like this year and cannot choose which one to pick as THE SHOT for the year.
The first is a combination of 4 exposures shooting into the direct sunshine at sunset. I processed to make things very light and bright (without blowing exposures Jim!) because that is what it felt and looked like.
The second shot was taken a several minutes later and is a standard closeup of flowers with a lovely background. The very last rays of light illuminated the lupine flowers.
If you prefer one over the other, I'd love to hear which one you like and why.
I've included the prior 7 years for comparison. I like to see them together to tell a story of time and nature.

Gordon, this is such a neat project. This years 1st pick is really outstanding. You captured the feel of the sunrise light if that makes sense. I feel like I am standing there and feel the warmth of the sun . Great job they are all really nice. Regards,
Dean
That is quite the series you have been compiling letting this be one of the few times we allow exceptions to the 5 photo limit for our threads.
For your 2014 selections, #2 to me is the winner hands down... For my eyes... the only chance your #1 shot to beat out #2 is to add some more contrast to #1. It feels a bit washed out. You worked the image wonderfully, just add a bit more contrast, or pull down the midtones some more.
Gordon, I was just thinking about your series the other day, as I am planning a trip to Montana and Wyoming. I always enjoy seeing a new version of this cabin. Your second image for this year is one of my favorites! It is stunning. Thanks for posting these over the years. Much appreciated.

Ah it's the time of the year for the cabin series . I think a few more years and you might have a very nice coffee table book there. Beautiful photos throughout all the years.
It has been a year already? Wow! It seems like only yesterday that you posted your last installment.
My favorite is #2 from the 2014 series. I really like the side lighting, and the calm feeling it gives me when I view it. I'll echo Jim's thoughts regarding adding a bit of contrast to the foreground of the first. That's also a lovely shot, but I think the light quality is much nicer in the second, plus you don't have to deal with the bright highlights of the sun, which are always difficult.
Nice work here, I like them both. I like the light, the sun, and the mood in #1, but as I had never seen this series before I found myself wishing you shot it closer to the cabin. It's shot too far away to make out much detail in the buildings or fences. #2 is a lovely shot, and answered most of my curiosities, but I miss seeing the sun you included in #1. Sorry I can't help you pick just one, I think this is the year for two shots. Great work, please keep it up, I can't wait to see next years installment.
