I’m having trouble nailing focus on eyes at distances between 5-10 feet, at f2-5.6, 1/60-100 sec shutter, hand held, A7r3. Does anyone here have a describable MF technique for nailing these shots? I can’t reproduce the details with the 65mm APO (lens rentals) that my 55 Zony gets. Thanks for helping the MF rookie.

For me it is just using magnification. As a primary MF shooter, I have the big dial in the back programmed for focus magnification. I move the box to where I want to focus--in this case the eye--then I push twice to get magnification and I can get very sharp shots. I use an A7r II, but you could do the same thing with the A7r III. I think for eyes magnification works better than any other technique, at least for me it does.

Fred, have you tried that closeup filter on the 135 batis?
The Marumi 5+ didn't work well with the Batis 135. It gets the Batis @ 1:1 macro but IQ suffered too much. For this lens, I would go with either Marumi 3+ (@f/5.6) or Canon 500D 2+ (@f/4)
Question aside... Does the lens barrel protrude when focusing at non macro distance?
Also, is this lens of much vs little use for you (who responds) aside macro?
Thanks.

I use this all the time for landscape photos. Its clarity throughout and sunstars make it an excellent "70mm" It's my walkaround lens on hikes as I also use it for macros.
So, it's quite useful outside of macro for me. If I was shooting street or portraits, it wouldn't be nearly as highly regarded by me due to manual focus and better bokeh on other lenses.

Not home to verify right now, but IIRC the extension only occurs at macro distances.
My favorite lens! As liftedspirit said, it makes a wonderful walkaround/hiking lens, and the macro is superb.

Hi Enri,
I just received this wonderful lens, and no, the lens does not extend as you approach infinity. I have not (yet) shot any macro so can't comment on that, I plan to use it as a walk-around lens though.

There is a new rumor that Voigtlander will announce 2 new lenses at Photokina.
I'm hoping for a 28mm and 180mm. How about you guys?
I'm hoping for that 28mm but I don't think they will actually announce new lens developments before announcing release dates for 2 of the previously announced ones (110/2.5 and 21/3.5). Last 2 years they've announced new lens development at CP+ and completed releasing the previously announced ones before the following year's CP+ so it would be a bit strange to announce new ones now after they announced 3 at the beginning of March and haven't quite completed releasing them.
Other than 28mm I could use something between 65mm and the upcoming 110mm, e.g. something smaller at around 75-90mm. I have the nice old 75/2.5 Color Skopar LTM and something like that in native E-mount could be nice. I'm not so keen on getting longer tele lenses in MF.
I just bought back a Loxia 21 but like to see how the CV 21 stacks up. The size and weight of the CV 21 will be a big plus for me if the image quality is 95% as good as the Loxia.

IMO, Voigtlander missed a great opportunity to release a "missing" native 28mm FL lens!
I have clicked “buy now” twice on the loxia 21, but held back at the checkout, logic says the voitglander 21 can’t be as good as the loxia, but I have the 12-24 and what I want is small and lightweight, so I need to be pacient and see how the CV stacks up,
The cv 65 and 40 are my favorit lenses, I will add 2 more lenses this year a 21 and probably the 110 when released then the 15mm next year, I have a feeling it will end up being the loxia, but It is worth holding fire for a month,
If we said the loxia is CV closest rival, both the 40 and 65 have brought a lot to the table, as I am sure the 110 will, the 21 seams a bit of an anomaly in this lineup, a dedicated landscape lens? Then it needs to be super sharp, slower and lighter is great if it matches the sharpness and has some character

Aside from the obvious focal length and aperture, how does this lens compare optically to the 40/f2?
Likely more color corrected and sharper across the frame at WO given the size of the 60/2 is not at all small. Being sharper is a moot point though depends on how you are going to use these lenses.

Realized I made a typo in my last post, I meant to say 40/f1.2. What would you say are the different use cases for these two lenses?
