Let's hope it does not have an 11-minute "review" of the specs., but how it actually works in the real world, along with actual images of the results.
I just renamed this thread and that should be good going forward....I promise you that on Sept 13th or shortly after I will give you a extensive hands on field report....
Geoff go ahead and begin YOUR thread. Who am I to contest...I'm a Sony intruder in Nikonian land
I'll hit you up for settings. Thanks.
p.s. a big fat Sony XQD card and dual reader have shipped.
Trying to think what else the D500/500PF combo needs. Oh I remember. They need
a 300PF
OMG, just had a nightmare reflection back to my clickity clik days. MFA
But I see Professor Steve has a vid on the internal MFA. Like going back to school.

I decided to just rename this thread as it already has tonnes of info and can continue on with images once some of us get this lens....seems more people ordered this lens than the Z6/7
Watch the Professor's video and you will have no issues for Auto MFA.
One thing I will mention...I may have missed this in Steve's videos the first time around but then found documentation on it over on DPR from Marianne....
Once you do the LV Af (or MF) to get perfect focus you don't have to redo that step for each of the 12 runs...once I realized this I got much more consistent numbers....I was doing the focus in LV step for each of the 12 runs which seemed to give me much more erratic results. This may have been in Steve's videos from the start and I just glazed over it.
Oh and remember this 500PF is only 2 oz heavier than the Sony 100-400GM.....

This is not NR claim. I believe it was stated in Nikon announcement
Ok, I saw what you see in the screen shot..... "by NR Admin”. I guess now, that they probably picked it off a Nikon site.
Does it matter as much, who said it, as it asks “How did they arrive at that claim”? I wonder what the reason is.
______
It will be very exciting if the loss is *indiscernible* (which it probably will be) and if the AF is as fast as the 300PF w/o the 1.4 and faster than the 2-5 with the 1.4.
I’m optimistic that this will all prove to be true.
This is going to be a very exciting lens for sure. I watched Steve Perry’s video on it. The added feature that I did not know about was that function button he mentions. That could be sweet, considering that the left hand is on the barrel. I agree that the problem with my 2-5 is *not* holding onto a BIF it has acquired....it is difficulty (slowness) in acquiring.
Marc, Sept 26th! You have wAAAAAAAAAAAAAy more confidence than I do in posted
availability dates. Yes I read Sept 13th too and thought that has to be a typo.
Well I hope your 500pf is going to Botswana. Mine just needs to get here by December
for Bosque.
Thanks for the tips Geoff.
I remember hauling a 400/500/600 and 1DXii/7Dii/5Dsr to the hospital. Why? Hallways that
are 300 feet long and super well lit. I'd carry in additional lighting too.
Certainly seems D500 is my crop/pixel density dilemma solver coupled with cancelling the routine chiropractor visits.....there is always the possibility Sony will leave the rangefinder style with their next cropper but I'm not taking any chances.

Positive thinking MM........we have to believe!!

Yes, D500 + 300PF + 500PF + TC sounds like a great combo for shooting wildlife, especially when it is fast moving and you have to travel light. I'm sure that by the time I'm going to purchase (next spring) there will be extensive reviews comparing the IQ and AF of the 500PF against the 300PF + 1.4/1.7x TC
Possibly the 300PF + TC would be sufficient for me in many situations and it remains to be seen how much extra the 500PF offers for the relatively big extra cost (and some extra weight).
I'm still using Canon gear but I don't see anything like this from Canon on the horizon; my only regret would be the poor (slow) Liveview AF on the D500 compared to my current Canon 80D, something I really value for macro. But who knows, we might get a slightly improved D500 at some point.
Indeed Nikon has taken the diffractive optic and run with it. You'd think Sony mirrorless with an emphasis on supposed weight savings would have followed suit, a shame they didn't. I can only imagine the 300PF or the 500PF on the a9 as Alex already has imagined and photoshopped in another thread. Great wishful thinking there.
Who knows the future. Maybe it will become SoNi since Sony makes their sensors and the two can just go ahead and bury Canon
We all know Sony owns bits and pieces of several companies. I have to wonder if they have a stake in Nikon.....
At least I'm 5th in line at my local store chain... We'll see if Canada gets some love from Nikon (aside from 5 year warranty of course haha)
My bank account will thank me if that is the case with the 500PF....Canada usually does better in getting stock from Nikon....we had D850s sitting in stock for up to a week well before Xmas last year...it still wasn't constantly in stock but way better than the US situation.
I think Nikon may be playing a bit of a silly game with that "apology".....we shall see....

Helping the feeding frenzy along a bit, this just in from BestBuy-
'Robert, your order has a new fulfillment date.
We were just informed that the fulfillment date for the item listed below has been updated to Monday, September 17, 2018.
You don't need to take any action at this time. We'll keep you posted if anything else changes, and we'll let you know as soon as it's ready.
We appreciate your patience, and thanks again for shopping at Best Buy®.
Sincerely,
Your Customer Care Team '
And at the bottom of the e-mail an image of the Nikon 500mm PF.
I doubt BestBuy Canada would ever carry that lens but BestBuy has often been a good bet for preorders for all sorts of products from cameras to iPhones so hopefully you will get one in the first round.
Was your initial date the 13th or later than the 17th?
My store in Canada said they have no idea how many Nikon will send them for the 13th and therefore no idea if I will get one in the first batch but they did confirm the 13th is the expected release date.
