Nice shots. In my neck of the woods. Did you see any ducks?

Ducks for sure, just nothing really within camera distance. Not sure why, but wildlife seemed unusually scarce. Maybe because of the lower temperatures. Definitely cold at night. The spoonbills had mostly tucked in for the night by the time light was good.

I'll be in St Pete (on Treasure Island) until early March, so plenty of opportunity to try again. Just one of those things, sometimes you come up empty-handed. *Shrug*

Excuse me if this has been asked before, but I was unable to find any discussion on this. The D500 + 500pf is a very popular combination. If my primary body is now a Z 7, and am considering a Z 9, would a Z 50 be as good or better than the D500 for wildlife/birds as a DX option? Newer processor, slightly more fps and cheaper, yet I don’t see anyone using one with the 500 pf. Or, just use crop mode on Z 9 and avoid dealing with two bodies? (All my F mount lenses work fine on a Z 7 for my purposes, so am not in general going back to DSLR bodies, for the purposes of the discussion, but would get a D500 in preference to a Z 50 if it’s a better match for the 500pf.)

I don’t see having both Z mount and F mount feasible in this kind of focal length. Anything beyond 300mm is $$$ and likely you’ll need a set of TC as well. If you have an f mount and Z mount, you’re spending double to have separate sets of TC.
I see Z9 as the all around camera that can do everything. A Z7(I or II) as a landscape and light action as back up if you want to go light.
As much as I love this 500mm PF, I just can’t see myself owning another set of TC on f mount when I’ll have a set of TC for Z mount on upcoming Z superteles.

I was really just asking about the relative merits of the D500 vs. the Z 50 for use with the 500pf, if anyone has compared those two with the 500pf. That's all.
I have a ton of F mount lenses, and already have the teleconverters, which I don't have any real reason to give up after moving predominantly to the Z 7 as a body. Some people have reasons, I don't. So, it's not a cost issue. (If it's not a cash flow issue, it isn't a cost issue, is how it works in my head when lenses are concerned. It's not the Mobil Economy Run down in here. YMMV.)

There is no direct substitute for the 500pf in the Z roadmap, which is why I asked. Plus, the 500pf exists and the others not only are not direct replacements, they don't exist.

Anyway, back to my original question, any reason not to use a Z 50 instead of a D500 with the 500pf, or any reason not to just use crop mode with the Z 9 and just dispense with DX bodies entirely, if trying to get extra reach with that particular lens? It's a theoretical question for me at this point, just trying to get some information from those who might have tried both. Thanks in advance.

While I have not used a Z 50, I have used both a D500 and Z fc with the 500 pf.

There are a few images here using the Z fc with 500 pf

For the most part the Z fc works well, however like many mirrorless bodies I do get focus freezing. A quick tweak of the focus ring kicks it back into gear. I do hope the Z 9 doesn't suffer from this. It's amazing how many Canon R5 users claim they don't suffer from it, yet when we're out photographing birds, I hear them muttering about missing shots due to focusing issues.

Other than that, using the electronic shutter ensures quiet operation. I'm amazed how it can focus on subjects which blend into the background. Another issue, which is also one for other mirrorless bodies I've used, which include Nikon, Fuji, and Olympus, if shooting into a bright background the subject becomes a silhouette. You can compensate by brightening the EVF, but it does make it difficult to identify the subject. I've not practiced birds in flight much with the Z fc mainly due to COVID restrictions and unable to get to open locations. From my limited experience of shooting BIF with the Z fc, the D500 is much better due impart to the EVF lag of the Z fc.

Crop mode (DX) vs cropping: There is nothing to say you cannot use the crop mode in the Z9 or any other FX digital. It's either that or cropping.

If needed, I choose to crop after the shoot. That way, I still have FX if the animal is close enough. I like to put as many pixels on the subject as possible.

Until the Z9 is delivered and I start using it, my go-to will continue to be the D850.

Anyone know where the D850 thread is? Can't find it.

Love that Red-bellied Woodpecker George! Glad you didn't take out the extra stuff. My eyes instantly went to the bird *and those dead leaves*.
