Ok, but the rumor timing makes me wonder if it's not convenient to wait for a real news from Sony about a future A9, or better to let A7RII go and pull the trigger for the current A9, which I am inclined to do in a couple of weeks (for ~3000€ - on change it is something like 3400$, keeping in mind that in Italy prices go the opposite of exchange rates ).

You can find some satisfaction, accepting many and many misfocused pictures, with slower-paced birds. Swallows are a bit... out of the game if not by luck.

I'd say go with A9 now at 3k. Even if next gen A9 was announced today with availability tomorrow you are looking at 5k minimum for the latest & greatest tech.

This lens is so much fun. I'm going to get the A9 or 6500. What do you guys think is the best option? a6500 obviously very cheap and I can just buy it today. Also need to add the 1.4x. Anyone used both with the 100-400 to comment on user experience?

I know Tony @Imagemaster@ with the post right above yours had the A6500 before the A9...maybe he will chime in. I would look at an A6400 for the new AF although you will lose IBIS.
However, the A9 is by far the better camera. The features that its special sensor allow are not matched by anything else out there. The only reason I would go with A6500/6400 over an A9 is if you are "reach" starved and need the pixel density OR for serious cost savings. The A9 also does remarkably well with the 100-400/2xTC but you need to be in good light for f/11...focus and IQ are still very good though. The A6400 can also focus the f/11 combo but I have no idea how well.

Didn't use the A9/100-400 much out with the foxes as most times reach from my Nikon setup was still the better choice. Here are a few I did take on the first day...

Some GORGEOUS images all!
Just shot this lens for the first time-what an amazing piece of glass! While admittedly easier subjects than birds to capture, these 500MPH jets were worthy subjects!
