Exactly! I had sold mine a year ago for the 200600G and regretted it. I tried the 90 macro and liked it...but felt I had to get too close to critters? With 100400GM I can track them with great AF and keep a reasonable distance. Love to hear other opinions on using the 100400GM vs. 90mm for close up, macro work. Great shots 👌

Love this shot! This is what I am trying to aim for vs. True 1:1 macro...hence why i just repurchased the 100400GM. I'm not sure the 90mm would allow you to get this same shot, wouldn't you have to be much closer with the 90 macro and likely scare the subject away? I would think a tele is an advantage here? Thx

I also own the Voigtlander 110mm f2.5 Apo with a working distance of 7 inches from front of lens without hood to the subject at 1:1 and I believe the Sony 90 macro slightly under 6 inches.
It’s very hard to get that close to living critters without spooking them. Dragonflies can be extremely cooperative though and I have had good luck with them. Even with with the zoom at 400mm at .35x (3.22 feet) it’s a challenge like for butterflies.

Wow these are superb! How do you like the 100400GM? These shots are very sharp and colors are beautiful
The 100-400 was my one and only Sony lens for over a year before I got the 200-600. It is a great lens. However, because I mostly shoot birds, I'm always using the 200-600 for more focal length.these days and the 100-400 doesn't get much use. I still like using the 100-400 for semi-macro stuff (bees, butterflies, dragonflies, flowers). I also don't trust the performance of the 200-600 on my A7RIV so sometimes I bring out the 100-400 (as I did today) which works really well on the RIV.

Exactly. Every once in a while I get these results under certain conditions and it takes away a bit of confidence with a lense that otherwise is outstanding. I've seen this kind of thing before and it appears to me to be a reflection from the sensor surface reflected off of the diaphragm and back to the sensor. There are some older Nikkor lenses that do this in a very similar way.
If that's the case, I wonder if the lens hood inclusion or not would have an impact on the issue. I know for certain that one occasion where I had this issue, and wasn't using a filter of any kind, I was shooting some back/side lit buttes off in the distance. The sun and the light had nothing to bounce off of in front of me. But I don't recall if I used the lens hood or not. It's likely that I didn't as the sun was primarily behind me, slightly off to the side.
In my initial looks at my photographs from Glacier, Yellowstone, Beartooths and a bit of Grand Teton, I've not seen any blatant occurrences of the issue. And I shot almost exclusively with the 100-400. Unfortunately, the light conditions I've experienced it and you, did not occur much as it was foggy, low clouds a big chunk of the time.

What the heck is this large light spot in the center of my image? Three very similar pictures show the same thing. I've not seen this before in any of my images, even the images taken a few minutes earlier in the evening.
No CPL, just a B+W MRC filter that's been on it through all my shots since I've had it.
Thoughts?

Was the chinook in each of those photos? I'm thinking military weaponry against photographers to ruin a sunset

Agreed. I own both the 200600G and 100400GM. I must say the images coming from the 100400 are a touch sharper with nicer rendering. Another area of difference is the AF... the GM seems to focus faster and more precise. I wonder when Sony is going to resolve the AF issues with the A7RIV and 200600G lens combination? It’s been a while since release and we haven’t heard any confirmation from Sony (nothing official yet). Very frustrating as I do not own 2 bodies and do not plan to invest in another Sony body if they do not fix the issues... I mean I can get a 90 percent keeper rate with the 100400GM but I’m lucky if I get 50 percent keepers with the 200600G! Unacceptable

Thats what I expected. But on mine the lens lock was so weak that I never had to push the button taking off the hood. It just clicked on or off like a normal hood. It was like this from new. Maybe mine was defective.

Going to Scotland for a few days I was wondering if I am going to be using my 100-400 a lot.
It stayed on my camera fro almost entire time except for some wide angle long exposure shots with the 16-35GM.
Two lens combo - perfect.

Tried my hand at something different. This is the first time I've ever used a flash and I was just playing around. Had I known I was going to get such a great splashI would have been more diligent about cleaning my fingerprints off the glass and figuring out how not to get the flash reflection in the glass as well. JPEG edited in LR on my iPhone.
