I was wondering if this lens was the right choice for Motorsports and after seeing darthalal pics I’m sold to the lens. This bad boy will join me in the USA and Mexico F1 GP.

About half the images in our house are from this lens. Great landscape lens in addition to capturing wildlife. Also great as a pseudo macro. Such an incredibly capable and versatile lens.

One can almost believe that the macro lens is on
maybe even better on the A7r III-A7r IV for details
here on the A9 and 100-400 Gm is a good lens
Love this lens for closest focusing distance

Thanks Ronny. Gorgeous image, great composition, light, colors.
The FE 100-400/4.5-5.6 GM OSS, including the 1.4x and 2x Teleconverters is my most often used native Sony FE lens on my A7R II and A9, the latter currently being my main camera. I don’t think that will change once the A1 becomes my main go to camera body. My second most often used native Sony FE lens is the FE 90/2.8 Macro G OSS lens, followed by the FE 400/2.8 GM OSS that I usually use on a tripod with a fluid head. I am thinking of adding the FE 200-600/5.6-6.3 G OSS lens, hoping it’s not too heavy for me to use handheld.

I’ve been looking at the 100-400 for a while. Rented it a few weeks ago and enjoyed using it. I shoot nearly all nature photography of varying types. I’m wondering if there is a chance this lens is going to be upgraded by Sony soon, and should I hold off on buying, I know it has been around for a while.

Good question. It's "only" 4 years old. And still a great lens. I love mine and can't wait to try it out when my new A7RIV arrives, hopefully today.
What I love about the 100-400 is it's far lighter than the 200-600. It's super sharp and one can carry it all day long. I suspect that Sony has no plans to update it just yet. But who knows what Sony will do. Everyone thought the new announcement would be the A7IV. Now it seems it's a new APSC camera. Personally I would just buy the 100-400 and enjoy it.

Sony has not updated any FE lenses to date. Unlikely the 100-400GM will get that update. The question is how good is the Tamron 150-500 going to be. 100-400 is 3lb, Tamron is 4lb and 200-600 is over 4lb. I definitely feel that extra 2 lb with the 2-6. Not sure if 3 lb - 4lb is going to be significant.

One thing to check is the closest focus distance of the Tamron. The Sony 100-400’s is close enough for real close-ups - if that’s important to you.
