The hooded mergansers are not common in California, they usually here in the winter time and their favorite food is Crayfish.

Like all Merganser they are fast and that's quite clear with the small amount of motion blur at 1/1000 on the head for image 2 and 4. Real nice set Ann. They should go to New Orleans and get there Crayfish prepared casein style!
