just like to learn, in terms of "ring flare" without hood, did sony feedback anything to that?
I'm still on-the-fence, due to this issue.

I don’t think there is much feedback to have on this. The ring flare is a byproduct of the lens element design or lens coating no doubt and not something that can or will be fixed. All lens designs involve compromises. That is my take on it anyway.

yes, most likely it is.
But as Fred's description, looks like it more related to the finish-process of the ring in the front part of the inner-barrel? Not much of opitical?
If it's the finish process of the inner barrel, it might be fixed.

Aah sorry, didn’t think about that part! Yes, maybe they would fix that.

I don't recall reading it, but did anyone notify someone (who might make get it fixed at) Sony of the flare/reflecrtion issue?

I think Fred did. I view it as not a big deal. I won’t be using the OEM hood either. I have either a 82 to 72 step down or a shorter 82 hood. I’ll test them both
You'd think Sony would have discovered this during testing, and done the filter threads in a non-reflective finish or used a tough matte plastic insert - assuming the lower reflectivity would do the trick.
Actually nobody including Fred, Guy, Bastian and me discovered (in years) that the GM 85 has this issue too. I think we and the FM community are very critical users, so I hope it won't affect real life use too much.

This is happening because light reflects from the inner threaded wall into the bulbous front element. I've tested flocking that area and the issue is gone even when not using a hood so perhaps a non-reflective matte finish could minimize or even eliminate this issue.
I've told Sony about this but didn't hear back. I doubt something will be done about this since it also happens with the GM 85.
It's just something to keep in mind when shooting under backlit situations. I would always attach the included hood or equivalent.
I've been shooting with the 85/1.4 GM since it was released and never encountered the issue because I've always had the hood attached.

What do you think the purpose of all those inner threads other than the filter thread? Several lenses have similar design.
The 85 and 135 GM lenses have a similar bulbous front element and the inner threads go deep down to the base of the element. So far, they are the only lenses showing this issue.
Thank you. I've not yet encountered this issue with any of this lenses myself. But then again I haven't gone looking for it. But I did notice many of my lenses have several inners threads, not just the GMs and am curious as to the purpose of so many inner threads. Batis lenses are a good example particularly the 18. Lots of inner threads toward the front element.

To hold the front element or some other part of the optical assembly in would be by guess.
What I might do is find out the likely thread size, and if it corresponds to a standard, cheap filter size, I would find myself some of these cheap filters and remove their retaining rings I'd then screw in the retaining rings to form a better light baffle.
Thank you. Been googling this inner threads things without success since someone else bought it up. Couple good theories going around but noting definitive. Just curious anyway.
That metal hood looks like the same one as on the CV65/2. I find it very useful (especially with a CPL as it keeps my fingers from touching the filter). It probably helps with "ring flare" as well.
Metal hoods make me nervous around certain front elements e.g. GM 24-70. Would rather stick with the OEM plastic fantastics. The big ugly OEM hoods have saved my bacon a few times.
I own a few M lenses that come with screw-on metal hoods, but the lens and hood is so small anyway and well built/fit I just leave as is and rarely unscrew the hood.

Hi, I'm curious about being nervous with metal hoods on the 24-70GM, can you tell me more?
The only 3 lenses that I do not use metal hoods for are Sony's wide zooms because the 12-24 has a non-removable hood and both the 16-35GM and 24-70GM vignette too much when I've tried "wide angle" metal hoods.
To me the OEM hood for this lens is already very good /functional/slight. I use the GM 24-70 for events. This means I am usually dueling cameras and quickly reversing the hoods and stowing in my PD Sling while retrieving some other camera kit out of the bag normally as fast as I can. I'm usually on the move through the crowds, track, or chasing to the best position for the next shot and don't want to worry about the hood scratching the front element while I'm concentrating on getting the shot and moving gear in and out of the bag quickly. The front element of the GM 24-70 in particular comes very close to the edge of the lens. Metal anything near that element = no, no IMO particularly when I am in the zone.
YMMV. Just the way I go about it and others are probably very happy with their metal hoods otherwise.

Thanks for confirming this!
Maybe i can wait for a few months, staying with my 70200GM first

"very critical users" that's true!
that's also true, i didn't notice 85GM ring-flare before, though i used to mount the hood always
i would think of 2 issues might be related (for 135GM)
- not sure if there is a recall, so copy-inspection efforts could be wasted.
- have to take hood almost anytime (might be acceptale actually);
Well my friend offered to buy my Sigma 135 for what I paid for it new because he couldn't find one that was as sharp as mine. So far I've tested 3 new ones and they were all softer than mine .... I guess I'll have to get a 135 GM lol, I have an $850 gift card at best buy so I guess I'll pick one up from there but it looks like they don't do pre orders .....
