I knew you would love this lens just because you are a fan of the 50/1.4 ZA. Aside from the 135 GM's faster and more accurate AF, they are similar in look imo.
Fred, in what way, can you help me understand your comment more? My 135mm will be coming today but I already own the FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA.
Also just an interesting fact. The new Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L and the Sony 135GM weigh the same so I am curious how big would a Canon RF 135/1.8L be? ~20%? That is the increase in weight from the 50mm f/14 ZA to the 135mm f/1.8 GM. 950 gm doesn't seem so big now.

Currently the Sony 135/1.8 GM is the lightest lens in its class although many will still think it's too heavy at almost 1kg.
Both 50/1.4 ZA @f/1.6-1.8 and 135/1.8 GM wide open share similar level of very high contrast / resolution while their background rendering is not as smooth compared to lenses under-corrected for spherical aberration (Samyang 50/1.4 and 85/1.4 GM comes to mind). What I see is neutral and well-balanced background/foreground bokeh rendering for both lenses.

Just out of curiosity. Anyone have an A7riii and the Samyang 85 1.4. Wondering what that in crop mode would look like compared to the 135GM.
I own the Samyang AF 85/1.4 FE and think it's their best lens so far with smooth rendering and great contrast/resolution levels.
Wide open, it offers slight more contrast and resolution compared to the 85 GM but can't match the 135/1.8 GM's resolution/contrast levels.
How does it compare to the 135 GM in crop mode? After post-processing and resized for the web, I don't think they will be too much apart from each other but at higher magnifications, I think the new GM will out-perform the Samyang with better color aberration correction and of course resolution, especially in crop-mode. (18MP on the A7RIII)
I love the Samyang because it's so light at ~550g and therefore it's an easier lens to carry around. The 135/1.8 GM is almost double its weight. After some color temperature correction, the Samyang is capable of very pleasant and high IQ images.
Having said that, the 135/1.8 GM provides a longer FL and has superior IQ.
The question is: How would a Samyang AF 135/1.8 FE compare? You know it's coming.

Thanks Fred
Yeah, since the last update I have been really enjoying the Samyang 85 1.4. The only lens prior to that one I ever wanted to keep was the manual focus 135mm f2. So you are probably right. Make that AF and you will have a winner Hoping they have this thing figured out now. Interested to see the 45mm 1.8 as well. I'm sure that will be stellar because I just bought back the Batis 40 for the second time
If anyone is interested, Amazon.de has the newly released 135GM at 1815€. Almost 200€ discount on a lens released 2 days ago. They don't have stock right now but for those with time and patience.. (no affiliate link, just sharing a awesome deal)
Went out to the bar with a few friends last night and had to snag a couple test shots of the performers. Eye-AF worked very well. Pretty long focal length for a club, but this lens would definitely be an excellent choice for low-light performance art in general.

I’m out of town so I don’t have my computer so these are straight from camera JPG. But Here is another 5 star review on the lightning fast focus and extreme sharpness noticed thus far...second photo is quite interesting, shot with no sound shutter.
do you have a link to share? I went to heavy star's ebay store and can not find it.. Since you just got your 135, are you happy with the lens flare control with the smaller hood 'cause what sony provides is ridiculously long and wide

Well mine arrived today and glad to see it came in great physical shape. Have not had a chance yet to test but I was surprised by the size a little. The 135/1.8 is 190 gm/in, the 70-200 GM is 188 gm/in and the 50/1.4 ZA is 183 gm/in.
Interestingly the cost per inch is
Just got mine today and took a few test shots and holy cow. It's a little beast. Just holding it, taking some shots and looking at the fat end of it, I can definitely see and feel the connection to the 400 GM. It's a little thicker and heavier than I thought it would be but I have no complaints since one of the things I'm trying to do is carry this instead of the bigger and heavier 70-200 GM. That 82mm end looks so big even though it's the same filter size as the 16-35 GM.
