Our jeep got a flat tire outside of the Serengeti, and while we were changing it, this Masai girl came out of nowhere and asked us for food.

I don't know how, but almost every time I get a flat out in the bush in East Africa, some tribe person(s) appear out of nowhere.

The Masai in that area have been having a hard time lately. I hope you were able to give her something to eat.

We emptied our packs and gave her everything we had -- just an assortment of energy bars and fruit. This may not be the most compelling image, but I found her face and demeanor haunting. And the colors of her clothes against the background of the savannah really struck me.

I love this image. The colors, expression, scars, etc. all combine to make a really strong photo.
