I am interested in this lens for use with a Sony a7r4 at f8-11.
I currently use a Minolta M-Rokkor 2.8/28mm which I really enjoy. I am happy with its performance on a Sony. It is good enough for me...
I am thinking that this Voigtlander 28mm is more modern with more elements so is more corrected and better with flare? I shoot alot of backlit scenes. I feel the Rokkor has a 'look' to it - someone said 'moody' - I like this but sometimes want a different look.
So how is this 28mm on a Sony? I will only be using this stopped down...
I also have a Minolta CLE MC 28mm f2.8 M-Rokkor lens without the white spots. I normally have used the lens on my Kolari Vision modified cameras where performs better than the stock cameras. I will be selling this lens in the not too distant future when the temperatures cool on the FM Boards.
I use the Voigtlander 28mm f2 Ultron II Asph VM lens on my Kolari Vision UT sensor modified camera and it has already replaced my Leica R 28mm f2.8 Elmarit V2 which I sold recently on the FM Buy/Sell boards. The Voigtlander is better (probably significantly) performing on the Kolari Vision UT sensor modified cameras than the Minolta 28mm M-Rokkor. But the Minolta lens is much smaller and much lighter.
I can not say how the Voigtlander performs on the stock A7rIV, but Fred can and has posted images.
I am posting my first image that I posted earlier comparing the size of the Leica 24mm f3.8 Asph., Minolta CLE MC 28mm f2,8 M-Rokkor, Voigtlander 28mm Ultron II Asph VM, and the Leica R 28mm f2.8 Elmarit V2.
The second image is cross posted in the Sony FE Image Thread and taken late yesterday afternoon at 5:58 PM.

If you check the images Fred Miranda posted (links are in the first post of this thread), you can see how the Ultron II performs on Sony a7RIV in the center, mid frame and corners.

Naturephoto1 thank you for your reply. I always enjoy your pictures.
Off topic - I have been thinking about getting my Sony modded but I am really lazy (in editing) and after reading about white balance issues I became hesitant. For that recent picture of the stream in the woods how did you shoot and then edit it - did you use a white balance card or just set the white balance to daylight? Or do you just ignore this and set the white balance in post? I only shoot b&w with rf lenses. So I feel the mod is ideal for me but as I am 'ok-ish' with rough corners I always decide not to get my camera modded...
Sometimes I even think about buying a Leica and then I see the prices, the megapixels and as I have never used a rf camera but love the evf of my sony I decide not to!
I think I know I ought to get my camera modded - I just need someone to tell me that! haha.
LarsHP - I should have said - I have read this thread several times. Obviously you dont know that so thanks for pointing out there are some test pics from a Sony in this thread.
I was looking for real world feedback from a Sony user with this lens.

Hi,
White balance is not really a difficult issue. I have a White card that was sent to me from a friend on FM. But, any white card should probably work. I did some tests under Daylight, Cloudy, and Shade conditions that I have stored in the memory of the camera for my 3 calibrations. In this case, I accidently recorded the image with the Cloudy calibration. So, I went back to some images in LR that I had shot in Shade conditions and then adjusted the color as closely as I could to the calibration settings for the camera memory for shade. If you want even more accurate White Balance, you could take a photo of the White card in the lighting conditions and then apply those readings when you process the images.
In any case, once I use the settings for the lighting conditions, I will fine tune the image in LR for contrast, and all of the other adjustments offered in LR including increasing the Vibrance and Saturation (usually about 10 and 8 respectively). For this image I had to cut back a fair amount for highlights and whites and bring up the shadows and darks a lot to better view these. I will also adjust if need be for exposure and vignetting. I also will often increase the sharpness and detail a little. Often for this lens, I will use the lens profile for the Leica M 28mm f2 Asph lens. Finally, and in this instance, I also used a little adjustment to defringe in particular for Purple (increase of 6) to eliminate the color fringing that I noted around the tree limbs and leaves near the upper right corner.
So I could take a WB card, make some custom WB settings and store these in my camera... Sounds simple enough - I can see that working for me.
For some reason I find WB quite daunting - I have never really got to grips with my WB card. I bought it when I shooting Canon DSLRs back in the day but never really got on with it. Mainly because I wasn't sure exactly what to do with it...
Would you have the mod done today - if you hadn't already had it done? No regrets?

Hi,
Use a White card specifically for the white balance. Take an image with the White Card in each of the lighting conditions, one for Daylight, one for Cloudy, and one for Shade and store them. Just remember the proper order as to 1, 2, and 3.
In my case, I had 2 of A7r cameras, 1 had been modified by Kolari Vision before the Ultra Thin Sensor modification was offered. The A7r with the modification still has color issues toward the corners and edges with some Wide Angle M-mount lenses like my Leica 24mm f3.8 Asph and my Zeiss 35mm f1.4 Distagon ZM. Most of this issue had been resolved when Sony introduced the BSI sensor of the A7rII cameras. I also had my A7rIII at the time when I purchased an A7rII on the FM Boards to modify with the Kolari Vision UT sensor modification. I had some concerns that the Sony lenses may not perform as well on the UT sensor modification. I had the modification of the A7rII performed about the time of the introduction of the A7rIV. When I had Kolari Vision perform the modification of my A7rII they just lowered the price to $400 for the modification for the A7rII while they were charging $500 to modify the A7rIII and the A7rIV.
Some who have had an UT sensor modification (at least the one from Taiwan) report they have not noted any degradation of the performance of the Sony lenses with that camera. But, I have no experience confirming this with my Kolari Vision UT A7rII.
For me, I would definitely consider an UT sensor modification as I wish to use some of my small sharp M-mount lenses with at least one of my Sony Cameras. As to would I do this for an A7rIV I am not sure as to the potential of degrading the performance of my few Sony lenses and the question as to how many of the small M-mount lenses can perform sufficiently well with the 61 MP camera.
Thanks again. It is not a simple decision. I think I will try this new 28mm and go from there.. I read up on the NKIR mods and they offer no simple answer either!

@Ulysseita@ did you campare results from M9 with Sony?
Yep.
As FM did comparing a7r4 and m10r, I did some tests.
The 28 is INCREDIBLE from wide open on M9, and quite good on a7r3 from 5.6; compared on A7 against my beloved and well calibrated by Fixation Uk 24 70 2.8ii Canon (impressive lens) is not as good on the corner and against bright streetlights; at least from 2.8 to f8.
I tested it on a7r3 for street photography in London and I am very pleased with the combination of weight, usability, starts and general rendering (from 5.6 to f11).
