I personally have not noticed any drop in performance and the results by others in this post as well as by others who owned this lens seem to confirm my experience. Your observations on the difference between the two lenses may be due to the difference in focal length (800 vs 600). Heat haze is a bigger issue at longer focal lengths I think. Handling a longer and larger lens introduces more complications also.

Testing today with a variety of methodologies, indoors, controlled lighting. Heat haze can be an issue, though when shooting at subjects <10m or so, it is unlikely to account for the resolution drop off. Also, it’s not a FL issue as I’ve accounted for that. Will update after the tests have been completed. The lens had previously produced excellent images as evidenced by those I posted earlier in the galleries. Looking at my portfolio, there has been a significant and inexplicable drop in IQ.

Curious to see what you find , I've owned this lens a little over 6 months. I've hated it the entire time until a couple weeks ago. I forced myself to give it a fair shot , nowI kind of love it. I find it challenging to use , but it can produce stellar results. Still figuring it out I guess. I just leave it on VR normal , that's probably not the best idea.

Just finished some static, tripod testing at MFD and slightly beyond and indeed the lens is functioning like it should. Color, contrast, sharpness, resolution are excellent and VR on/off didn't make a difference. I went outside as well and shot static objects including some structures (signs, bird houses, etc.) and some perched birds. They were all fine. Perhaps, I might have been inadvertently bumping the MF ring in the field or something else was at play. I noticed that the last series of shots that started me on this exploration were all taken with a nearly depleted battery.

Finally got out to shoot some birds again after many months of very little time for photography.

With Z8, shot wide opened, some cropping.

Thanks George, now we are in the middle of monsoon season with lots of rain for the past month.
Yesterday we had a little break in the afternoon so my very reliable spotted owlets are always
in the same location less than 10 minutes walk from my apartment
If nothing else, I could always count on them

Wish we have more ospreys over here. There is only one place in Thailand that I know that is quite reliable for
ospreys during their annual migration but waiting there all day, you might get only 4-5 chances to photograph them

Hate that Coppersmith Barbet. It is one of the loudest birds I've ever encountered.

Catching the action at 1/640s with an 800mm is impressive.

A few more of this blue heron at the local pond. the Z 800mm has become very useful in my still in progress objective to get a good photo of him (?)
