p.1 #1 · Run little skimmer, run!

This was Wednesday evening at Nickerson Beach. Most are heavy crops yet I provide one with no crop at all. 40 FPS barley captured this.

I spotted the black skimmer chick running across the nesting area and followed as I new something was going to happen. I bust as soon as I had focus.

Part 1 of 2

1) The black skimmer chicks is running the fastest I've ever seen one go

2) Gasp!

3)

4)

5)

6)

7) Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion in part 2. It will be a reply to this post

Got my heart rate up here Morris! You did an excellent job on these and I was wondering what frame rate you shot at as you have every little move and nailed them all.
The last one is priceless. Just goes to show how important it is to leave nature as we see it, it just might save a life I love this shot and YGMV

Was the adult skimmer trying to harm the chick or did it do it more on the playful side? At any rate, the sequence you captured was great, Morris, regardless of the nature.

Thank you Karl,
This was taken at 40 FPS. I only included one frame of the chick running before the attacker entered the frame and there were 3 from the first time the attacker appeared till contact. Just about to touch through the escape includes every frame as it's such an amazing sight. Then I showed only one of the chick getting back up and one of a two second run for cover. I captured a bunch of the chick behind the shrub yet I loved the one I show with sharp eye peeking out. My Fuji X-H2s latched onto the eye as soon as it appeared. That shrub is inside of the protected nesting area which is roped off and there are signs explaining the behavior, importance and types of birds that nest at Nickerson Beach. Some of the signs are professional designs with text and/or photos. Others are made by the local school children and there art work and writing quite amazing.

Thank you Gary,
This was one of the few times I stopped to review my photos as it happened so quickly. I was super happy when I saw all the great frames of the flip and also happy to see the chick survive the attack

Thank you Joshua,

I've never seen this behavior before this year. What I think is happening is there are a number of 1 year old skimmer males that were unable to find mates and they have been attacking the chicks hoping to make the moms available similar to the way lions behave. The skimmer colonies are family groupings of about 150 individuals and normally the entire colony takes care of the young. I can't see these 1 year old males getting what they want as the other members are chasing them around. There are usually 3 skimmer colonies at Nickerson Beach yet this year there are 4 colonies. This adds to the excitement when there is a defensive blastoff and there all in the air. There are also about 10,000 common terns nesting and they have all had a few chicks. It's an amazing place.

Morris these are amazing, I was hoping the chick would, against all odds, pull through.
Well done

Amazing Morris! If your idea is correct that's the same behavior male lions use to bring the female into estrus by killing their cubs.

Morris, awesome set! I have to be honest I'd struggle a set like that in the 13+ years I've been shooting birds.

I noticed you're using a FujiFILM body with a Nikkor lens. How's the performance?

Thank you Roberta,
The chick appeared to be fine. An hour later it was out playing with some of the other chicks

Thank you Louie,
I've been photographing the black skimmers at Nickerson Beach for 14 years and this is the first year I've witnessed this and it's happened a few times when I was there so It is happening a lot.

Thank you Bob. Even if my guess of what is happening is incorrect it's still an amazing sight and totally new this year.

Each frame is 1/40 of a second. Unless slow motion, a very short movie

Thank you Palo,

Performance is as good as with Fuji glass or from the other side having used the 500 PF on a Z9 just as snappy and the tracking just as good.

Wow! Morris you got my vote. Breathtaking action and detail. Amazing how your anticipation got you to capture this moment and how the camera did its part. All those things human eye can’t keep up with and need the pictures to see what happened! Super impressed by your hummingbird series composition, and now this!

Thank you Gilles,

I knew from experience when you see a chick running something is going to happen. The rest was staying with the subject and a great camera that could keep up with the action capturing the slight changes at 40 FPS.
