No settings are needed. If you mount a manual focus lens the focus box is red unless you happen to have perfect focus when you mount the lens. You just move the focus box to where you want to focus. There is an indicator in the lower right that tells you which way you need to turn the lens to get focus under the focus box. You just adjust focus by turning the focus ring in that direction until it turns green. When it turns green you get very accurate focus in my experience. I believe you can use this method with AF lenses too (if you switch on manual focus), but I haven't tried it....Show more →
It's almost as if they designed it to be very useful Thanks for the details

Yep, it works with AF lenses too. The only limitation for these MF assist tools is they require a lens with electrical contacts, which you indicated. This is because the assist tools rely on the sensor-based phase detect pixels, which to properly interpret the phase differentials require the camera to know the lens exit pupil characteristics.

Doesn't the camera really just need to know the focal length of the lens for the assist tools, and IBIS to work? Of course the lens must also have the ability to set aperture on it, and the EXIF data will all be incorrect or missing.

Focus assist tools don't work with dumb adapters.
Doesn't honestly matter, the EVF is easy to use, the focus peaking works well, and it's easy to punch in in real time to check focus.

Yeah my local store says they should of arrived today , and Nikon is working hard to ensure all of the early preorders are met. I'm #9 on the list , so surely I will get one too. We shall see soon enough.

Nikon Z8 battery at 79,99 euros EN-EL15C Made in China
evidently only partially accurate:
whereas the the EN-EL15C and all revisions i have are Made in Japan further processed in China (that might require some further details on that subject)
and
the 3 EN-EL18D i have/use are stated to be made in Japan only
now the only caveat is possibly the EU is getting different product or Nikon changed sources and I'm sort of lucky.

Spoke to Nikon rep yesterday, they seem to have a lot of Z8's prepared this time, both in 1st and 2nd waves.
As I have been saying for a few Months now, Nikon made a special effort to build big inventory in advance of the release of the Z8. I think many will be pleasantly surprised at how quickly their orders get filled.

Any new info about Z90 you could share...
I don’t get the whole “z90” thing. What’s the point? Is it simply a cost issue? I guess that and maybe file size.. The only advantage the d500 had over the d850 was the ability to put a focus point almost anywhere in the frame compared to the d850. That advantage does not exist anymore with mirrorless. So why not just go full frame?

Yes, cost.
It wil be an 1,5-2K difference (see Fuji XH2s). That's quite some money for me.
A Z90 will be probably smaller/lighter (same body as Z6/7 perhaps)

A lower megapixel sensor would likely have better noise performance, useful for the types of subjects usually shot on the D500, vs just cropping into DX on a FF sensor.

I think it is about reach, and cost as a second camera.

Price and resolution...if it happens to be 24 or less MP's, only price.
I know someone who shoots with r7, and 1.6 crop factor, plus 33MP's have significant impact, for the price way below Z8.
