I think someone had asked if the Z8 could do voice memos since the memo button from the Z9 is gone, and the answer, unsurprisingly, is yes it can.

Perhaps. I'd think a sports shooter would prefer the Z9 for the build quality, longer battery, and convenience of physical controls for memos if that's something they use frequently, though.

I don’t get the whole “z90” thing. What’s the point? Is it simply a cost issue? I guess that and maybe file size.. The only advantage the d500 had over the d850 was the ability to put a focus point almost anywhere in the frame compared to the d850. That advantage does not exist anymore with mirrorless. So why not just go full frame?

There were a few other D500 advantages...
1) 10FPS without any battery grip vs 9FPS and having to use a grip, end cap and expensive D5 battery to get 9FPS
2) Less obtrusive shutter noise....the D850 would scare off way more birds than the D500
3) Unlimited buffer (only software limited at 200 shots)
4) Smaller file sizes (you could shoot D850 in DX mode with VF mask but files were saved as FF size)

D850 also had some advantages over D500 like...
1) High MP FF sensor, "crop sensor" built in
2) Qc mode that helped mitigate VR issues with 300PF
3) Wider FOV to help keep an erratic subject in frame (say a fast BIF)

As far as focus point coverage, that was only a D500 advantage if you were shooting subjects with the D850 that were beyond the DX area. If shooting a reach limited subject that only needed DX area anyways then the focus points covered the same area on the subject.
One advantage of D850 related to focus points was if using a lens/TC combo that limited focus to the center few points. If the subject was suitable for DX but filled a lot of the DX frame then with D850 you could compose with center AF point on the head/eye and still have full subject in frame. With D500 if you used center points it may cut off the subject at the bottom of the frame.

I ordered late but it was a Kit not just a body. Was told most orders were for bodies only, so hoping perhaps that may sway things my way, I'll find out if I get an email on Thursday.

Wow, your effusive love affair with the A7R5 didn't last nearly as long as I figured it would.

I got to play around with a Z8 at the DC-area launch event yesterday. There is lots to like, but having been on Sony (and Canon) for many years now, the menu system, focus modes and custom button set-ups were a bit challenging, but surely something you will get used to. I'd love to see if I could make this my main camera as I have an old love for Nikon and the colors, but since I have Sony A7R5 with great lenses I think I will wait until these come out on the used market at $500 below MSRP. I'm in no rush.

You'll quickly learn that you bin most of the AF modes forever, and once the cam is set up, very little menu diving has to happen.

I think the Z8 will hit $3500 used pretty fast actually, with the Z9 used price getting very close the Z8 MSRP already.

You definitely pay a premium for 1st mover advantage. Like I got the A7R5 the day-of for $3,900, a couple of weeks later they are being sold for $3,300-400. I'll let someone else take the hit and put $500 toward a Z 50/1.8 S ;-) It is not like I lack photo gear...

I don't LOVE inanimate objects. . I know bro you carved away at me before regarding my comments on the likes of a A7RV. Heck the OM-1 is a excellent camera as well. What camera isn't these days. I was a Nikonian for the longest period of my career, over 12 years with 4 Nikon bodies along the way. I have nothing but warm memories of using them. They have some unique characteristics I missed. I simply wanted to work with a Z8 to see if it's bringing something to the table my Sony isn't. I can't say I've missed a electronic shutter as I haven't been a shooter of fast moving subjects. Mostly portraits and landscapes. But I simply HAD to have my hands on one of these Z8's to see what it is all about. I do know, and will say one thing. In my opinion Nikkor glass is the finest there is for shear resolving character. I'd rather be a friend than an adversary so lets hug and make up. .

As a A7RV owner and good glass I was trying my best to take your tack on the waiting game. But my addiction simply won out on trying a Z8 out. Hi, my name is Lee, I'm a cameraholic. also a "bagaholic" I could open a store for those.

You are much kinder to yourself than I am, I call myself a "bag-whore" ;-)

At any rate, now that I no longer shoot competitive soccer and mostly dabble in documenting everyday life, portraits, travel, some landscape & architecture, etc I do think I would survive fine for 90% of the use-cases with a Z8 + 24-120/4 + 50/1.8, but I also know I'm a sucker for character glass, and Sony is a lot of fun in that department with Batis, Voigtlander, etc lenses. Oh well, no rush this time.

I got the hat!

Attended a Z8 launch event sponsored by our local camera shop, Mike's. The camera looks just about perfect to me, I'm sure nikon has a winner here...just as the D850 was a winner for them. I will probably get one once the froth has worn off in a month or two. It does sound like Nikon has taken steps to fill the pipeline with cameras as best they can.

I enjoyed the laidback and fairly non-technical Z8 review

I got the answer to a question I've been asking - does the Z8 work as a high-quality webcam, like the Sony A7IV or A7R5 does? The answer is, shockingly enough no.

How about trusting Nikon over a Youtuber?

https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/sw/220.html

(no clue who is right, but if Nikon says the Z8 is supported, I'm inclined to believe them)

A small, indy company on the verge of going out of business. You've probably never heard of them.

Isn’t that the software he used? Everything he says is in Nikon’s notes. Not high quality, but Sony’s software also isn’t high quality lol.
