This one may not appeal to those who like their animals in colorful backgrounds, but I find myself increasingly drawn to minimalistic images of wildlife. There is something about foggy and overcast mornings that motivate me to look for something different.
This is a male sea otter that was feasting on both local and exotic crab species. We began our "session" with the otter foraging at a distance. Otters can become very curious about things going on in their habitat, and this one decided to swim towards me as I was sitting on a mudflat at low tide.
I chose a square crop to isolate the head and whiskers, and because square always seems to look better on my IG feed.

Beautiful image, Bruce, the minimalistic 1:1 approach with foggy morning and curious subject comes together spectacularly, your patient approach paid off!

Thank you Kalani...
I appreciate the words of encouragement. This shot is part of a larger project that will be the focus of my 2026 Calendar, Open Studios Sales in October, "show" in November, and other things I hope to share in the future.
I'm loving my Z8. It's extremely responsive and nails every shot when I do my job. These photos were taken with the Z8 and the Z 24-120mm f/4 S in Wittlensveiler (near Freudenstadt in Germany).
Here are some recent images taken with the Z9, the 400mm f/4.5, and the 1.4x TC. All images were shot wide open, with a shutter speed of 1/2500 second. These were taken on Whidbey Island, near Crockett Lake, for those that are interested.
