Wow, really looking forward to see their new line up. Last week I met a good offer for 50mm f1.1 sonnetar, price not cheap but it was hard to resist buying.

Their previous new release was Apoqualia 28/1.7 at end of June 2023.

With a teaser at this point I think the initial release could be already around beginning of December, based on their past teaser campaigns

Looking forward to more information hopefully soon!

Any guess on what the lens will be, Juha?

I haven't seen any rumors or hints about what specific new lens is coming out soon. My guess is that since MS-Optics are releasing new lenses quite rarely now, they would probably avoid anything with high risk of not selling well. Previously they released many very exotic lenses that didn't always sell well but there were multiple releases each year and some of them were always relatively popular. I think with the current slower pace of new releases they would likely want to release something less risky, i.e. a fast prime in one of the more popular focal lengths with some new twist as those have always been relatively successful for them.

They have had plenty of 50mm lenses and still have some remaining stock of 50/1.3 and 50/3.5 until recently so I think it might not be another 50mm.

They've had fewer few fast 35-36mm lenses that were always good sellers so perhaps another one with some clear differentiation to past releases could be a safe one with good chances of selling well, but it's been only 2 years since Apollon 36/1.3 was released.

It's pretty hard to predict... I hope they will already reveal it in about 1 week or so. I'm keeping a close eye on their Instagram

MS-Optics posted about the new lens in Instagram today:
-----------------------
「LUMITAR 3.5/50」

Leitz ELMAX TYPE, which MS-OPTICS has been researching for many years.

Original ELMAR 3.5/50
Super rare ELMAX TYPE.

Feel and draw history

MS-OPTICS also has Miyazaki's grandchildren.
-----------------------

It's different from what I was guessing earlier. I was expecting a fast lens and not 50mm so it's actually the opposite. I like the name "Lumitar", kind of Finnish feel to it (lumi is Snow in Finnish and Lumitar sounds like some kind of snow queen or snow fairy). There seems to exist a historical Japanese Lumitar 50/1.5 x-ray lens as well but this doesn't seem to have a relation to that (https://www.oldlens.com/Lumitar%205cmf15.html).

Perhaps they are of a prototype lens since there are no printings on the lens.

You can see an example of that original Elmax lens (which preceded the Elmar) here on this old Leica camera. Note the price (which is for the camera and the fixed lens):

Thanks to this thread, I am very delighted to add Sonnetar 50mm f1.1 to my little Ms collections, along with the Sonnetar 50mm f1.3 and Apollon 36mm. Happy sharing.

It is indeed collapsible, confirmed by Miyazaki-san's grandson. Their Instagram also has some photos that were added later, showing the lens on collapsed state. The hood can also be mounted in reverse which will make it more compact when collapsed. They also mentioned something in their Instagram about an LTM version of the lens in response to someone's question and apparently a Silver one will be released in January or so. I'm not sure how/when the LTM version will be made available though.

The planned release date for the initial version of the lens is 25th of December from what I heard. I'm planning to get one (Black one in M-mount). I don't know the price yet though. I expect it will become available for pre-orders a few days or a week before release.

My most recent outings with MS-Optics lenses on my A7CII:

Sonnetar 73/1.5 with LM-EA9 MK2 at Hiroo 11/29 (Autumn Leaves):
https://photos.app.goo.gl/EBdXS1oKybW6ooHc8

Elnomaxim 55/1.2 with LM-EA9 MK2 at Hiroo 11/27 (Autumn Leaves etc.):
https://photos.app.goo.gl/vmbxnExxm5L8EjSW6

Apollon 36/1.3 at Ueno 11/24:

H-Prot 40/6.3 at Kichijoji 11/23:

Aporia 24/2 at Shibuya & Daikanyama 11/17:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/LTyn3bWQ9ZX5Avup9

Both 73/1.5 and 55/1.2 worked very nicely with LM-EA9 MK2. I'm noticing a general trend with the adapter that the longer the focal length, the further the focusing works beyond the inner third central area of the sensor. It also works much better wide open than when stopped down and it doesn't seem to matter if the lens is soft or sharp at wide apertures. 73/1.5 worked especially nicely, allowing focusing as far from the center that I would generally like to go when shooting vertically. 55/1.2 didn't allow focusing as far (similar to any 50mm lenses I've tried on the adapter) but otherwise it worked very nicely. When stopped down to f8, AF on the adapter became much slower and less certain with both lenses (which seems to be general behavior of the adapter with other lenses as well).

Wider lenses that also have field curvature (like 24/2 and 36/1.3) are not very nice to use with LM-EA9 as they will be too restricted to central focusing area and on the other hand I need to focus somewhere in the outer midframe to balance the field curvature on stopped down shots, so I prefer to use those with manual adapters (I used both with my CV VM-E close focus adapter II here). H-Prot also doesn't work well with LM-EA9 so I used that one also with my CV adapter.

Hi Juha, I really enjoy your albums on all the MS lens. I am currently testing out my apollon 36mm, using the lens on Leica M10P, wide open f1.3 -1.7 produce much softer image than I expect for the lens. Glows, coma, aberrations are everywhere in the photos. Not until f2 the center part of image becomes more solid, but the corners remain quite weak. I wonder how your Apollon copy performs wide open ? Your images are really promising.

Below are my shots, mostly night shot from f1.3 - f2, files are not edited:

Thanks!

I use my Apollon mostly at f8 for long distance shots when I want best corner-to-corner sharpness, and at f1.3 for close range shots where I want lots of bokeh (close-ups of objects such as flowers etc.) I find f1.3 to provide sharper in-focus areas at the closest focusing distances, and the further the subject the softer it gets at f1.3. I use f1.3 for mid to long distance shots only when I want especially dreamy effect to the photos. Stopping down to f2 increases the sharpness already quite a bit and I sometimes use it for mid to long distance shots when I want semi-dreamy effect but not quite as dreamy as at f1.3.

I think this lens might be much more challenging to focus on a rangefinder camera and easier on an EVF (like my case, with my A7CII & A7C), and part of the softness you are getting might be related to ideal focus not being where it would be expected when using a rangefinder. The rangefinder coupling of the lens might not be perfect and it does have field curvature which would make it harder to focus with a rangefinder as well.

These are some of my photo albums with 36/1.3, most of the photos in them where you can see lots of bokeh were taken at f1.3. I did some light PP on all of them (mainly exported them from Raw via C1 Pro and applied my favorite filmic preset(s)).

Any idea how to use a UV filter on the Aporia 24?

The instructions mention E34, but the thread width seems smaller than that, maybe around 32mm.

Hi Fred,

I don't use filters myself so I have no personal experience of trying to use a filter on Aporia, but I found the following from
https://shige-art.net/ms-optics-aporia24/

"The manual says to take the glass of a 34mm filter and fit it onto the tip of the lens. The lens barrel has a thread for a dedicated hood, but the thread diameter is special and I couldn't find a compatible diameter filter on the market."

The product page https://www.mkdirect51.com/product-page/aporia-2-24 also says (I corrected their English mistakes below):

* Filter installation not recommended
FILTER M34 GLASS ONLY Glue (Adhesive)

Thanks for the info, Juha. I think I’ll follow your lead and go filterless with this lens.

I’ve been using it on my Leica M bodies, but today I decided to try it on my X-Pro3. This setup is quite compact, giving me a 35/2 equivalent lens, similar to the X100 series, but with much more character in the rendering (glow, coma, outlining), which I prefer on the Fuji.

Here is a sequence using the Fuji Acros Red film simulation, straight out of the camera JPEGs. (The EXIF may not be all correct, but all taken with the Aporia 24)

Has the MS-Optics 36/1.3 Apollon been discontinued? My friend has been searching everywhere, including in Japan, and can’t find one available.
