p.81 #7 · Voigtlander for Nikon Image Thread | |
I am replying to the post from AcuteShadows directly above, but it’s not letting me quote it, for some reason.
If I was wiser and more circumspect I would not reply to this in the way I am about to, but I’m not, so am going to offer an unsolicited, and unpopular, (here at least) opinion.
(First off, I should thank you for your comments here some long time ago in which you hinted that the Milvus 25/1.4 might even be better, or at least as good, as the phenomenal Milvus 35/1.4. I took your advice and now have both instead of just the 35/1.4. So, thanks for that. I will be eternally grateful).
Having said that, I am going to offer a contrary opinion on the merits of M lenses on Nikon bodies, even though I know exactly where, and why, the opinion that “Unfortunately, adapting Leica M lenses to Nikon will not work well” has arisen.
I am no stranger to looking at corners in 100% magnification, so it’s not that I am unaware of every bit of information the “will not work very well” statement is based upon, or why fixating on those can be so discouraging for anyone contemplating trying something themselves. To that, however, I would add that I have been using a large assortment of Leica M lenses, old and new, on Nikon mirrorless bodies for the last 7 years, starting with the Z7, (which instantly replaced the SL for that purpose, once I saw the results coming out of the Nikon) as well as using those same lenses, concurrently , on Leica bodies, M9, M240, M246, M10-R and SL. I have made hundreds upon hundreds of images with those lenses on both platforms, at various apertures, of various subjects, processed in various ways, and I would defy anyone, no matter what their training, or experience level, to look through random assortments of thousands of real world images made with a wide assortment of M lenses, on M bodies and Nikon mirrorless bodies, make pronouncements on which images were made with which bodies, and have a hit rate greater than one which would be attained by blind guessing.
Having recently dumped my M10-R, after having purchased a Zf and an AF adapter, to use adapted M lenses with (as well as all kinds of lenses from other mounts (as a countercultural adjunct to my Z8), I can honestly say that it was one of the best photographic decisions I have ever made in my long, twisted, life. In real world usage terms, and results, it has been all upside, zero downside. To say the combination, in fact, “works very well”, day to day, as a photographic instrument, is a significant understatement. Good possibility I will purchase an M11M sometime in the future, but that’s more for the monochrome files it produces than any other reason. Were Nikon to make a Monochrome body…..
