I will probably test this lens against Tamron 35mm f1.4...i know that Tamron is much better, but, i want to check difference in real world shoot

I decided to give this lens a try. I found some lifestyle images at f/1.4 from it that really look nice, if not a bit vintage looking. I have the 50 f/1.8 S when I need close to perfection and the 35 f/1.4 for a bit wider and more character.

A 600 dollar 35 1.4-

I am giving it a go-

It’s at home waiting for me. If it has fast AF, reliable focus and pleasing shots at 1.4, it’s a winner for me. This will be a people/video lens. Looks like it will check the boxes-

Thanks @Jman13 for the tests alongside the 40 f/2. The earlier tests looked really reminiscent of this lens and your samples confirm this.

I use the 40 more often in the last year, it has grown on me a bit. Maybe I could learn to like the 35 f/1.4–but I’m not sure it brings enough to the table over other options. I couldn’t stand the 35mm f/1.4G for its excessive CA, though plenty of people love that lens as well.

I am still curious to see more output from this lens. Even at the bargain pricing, not worth it for my use at this point. Maybe a second hand lens for $400 in a year will make sense to try.

Two shots of my cat. First is the Nikon Z 35/1.4 on the Zf - looks pretty nice here, with a mostly centralized subject on the lower megapixel body and generally a pleasing look (though not a tricky background).

Comparison shot with the Sony 35/1.4 GM on the Z8 - not too much difference at web size, but of course the Sony is resolving more detail in the eye when viewed at 100%. Also, the transition on the sofa leg in the background is smoother:

Interesting. I already own the 35 gm so an adapter might be in my future.

While the thread is trending towards "The 35GM is a better lens"...well, yes, of course it is. We always knew that. A used copy and an adapter are still going to run you almost double the Z 35/1.4 so you had better be getting superior results!

As it stands, the flaws of the Z are roughly the same as the 40/2 which can be had for $180. I still fail to see how this Z 35 is worth the asking price at MSRP. As others have said, perhaps a better get for $300-400 in a year.

I think it is priced fairly and will be a bargain used or on sale in the future. It is the lowest cost mirrorless designed 35 f/1.4 with AF on the market, it is a full stop faster than the 40 f/2 and better build (metal mount, includes a proper lens hood, etc). Retail price is 2X the cost of 40/2 and less than half the price of the more professional Sony GM, which seems about right.

Mine should arrive tomorrow.

One more point. The 35G at 1.4 has always demonstrated less CA and blooming than we've seen in this thread at and near MFD. Both of these are freshly taken right at MFD wide open. Brick test shows less fringing in the bokeh than the Z, and center test is both sharper/less bloomy than the Z with far less "soap bubbling" in the background. I assume this is down to the extra coatings the G has.

I still maintain that if fast AF motors aren't required, the adapted G is the best value 35 at this moment.

I had the Tamron 35 1.4 and it was amazing but heavy with the FTZ on the ZF so I went for the 40mm f2. If the 35 1.4z comes down in price I'll give it a try.

Yeah, it's very much a 40mm f/2 with a slightly wider FOV, and the ability to go a stop wider (with reduced quality from what it is at f/2). At the same apertures, the 35/1.4 and 40/2 are remarkably similar, both in sharpness and in overall rendering. That may very well be worth the asking price for many for the extra stop.

Quick rendering comparison at f/1.4 and f/2 between the 35Z, 40Z and 35GM. I could have done the CV 35/2 APO Lanthar, but if you're in the market for that lens and are fine with f/2 and manual focus, you should just get it. It's not really worth debating given how good that lens is.

I did include the 35GM again in this just to compare to a more well corrected optic with smoother bokeh, but as Scott mentions...it should be a lot better for twice the price.

Anyway:

Interesting to hear the 35mm f1.4 Z is so soft at minimum focus distance, granted that's not unheard of in lenses that have been designed more for character than sharpness.

Has anyone tested the sharpness of the 35mm f1.4 Z at infinity, or close to it?

I posted a full size image at f/1.4 on the first page. It's not at infinity, but it's at like 20-25 feet or so. It's fairly decent further out at wide apertures. Stopped down it becomes quite sharp.

I’m actually getting ready to sell my Sony 35 GM along with some other great Sony glass. I just don’t want to deal with adapters. I think the Z 35 is a great addition to the lineup with fast aperture and AF, decent build and relatively lightweight at a reasonable retail price. Maybe a Z 85 f/1.4 next?

It's actually remarkable how similar the rendering is to the 40/2. Thanks for those examples.

What's even more interesting is the Sony is not reaching its max IQ when adapted to Z and it's still leagues better.

I just started playing with my copy-

I am actually seeing somethings I really like about it so far- Seems like a really playful lens wide open.

Pair this with a 35 APO and you have a winning combo. Perfection when needed, character when shooting other things for about the same cost as the 35GM.

I don't always want a perfectly corrected shot. It will be nice if what I think I am seeing on wide open shots (glow, unique bokeh, critical sharpness in the center and smooth fall off) is actually how this lens will behave for me.

I am taking a ride through Portland tonight and will put it through its paces.

For fun, I am going to compare this to my 35 Leica Summilux and Leica 35 SR- So far though, I am liking what I am seeing.

I much prefer the Nikon in these examples. I have never really liked the rendering on the 35 1.4GM though.

I could see where for landscapes the 35 GM might be preferable but there are tons of better options for Nikon landscapes then adapting Sony lenses IMO.

If you already own it, seems like a sensible decision if you can live with the adapter.
i never could jell with with the 35 GM. To be fair I couldn't jell with Sony period and just put up with them for so long.

I mean, to each their own, but I don't really get it. But that's why choice is a good thing!

As someone who already owns the 40/2 and find it great for a very compact and cheap option, I can get the character look with that lens when I need it, but I'd rather have the smoother bokeh and sharper focus of the Sony for my fast 35. But again, that's all personal preference. (I also have a 35/2 APO for when I want manual focus, or peak image quality.)

Thanks for posting these. What stands out to me is that the FOV of the 40 looks very similar to the 35 1.4 assuming you were shooting on a tripod. I'm wondering if the the 35 1.4 is closer to a 37mm.
