Hi Dave,

It's interesting and kind of humorous watching these huge birds of prey interact and goof around together.

Thanks for posting,

A very nice, fun to watch video, Dave.

Great movement, excellent smooth tracking. It's like magic watching the R5ii stay locked on that young Eagle against an amazingly busy background. Great music choice as well.

Thanks,

Rudy

Being snowed in due to the Blizzard we just had I figured I would do up another video. Here are some examples of the Canon's C50 Digital Teleconverters. I used 7K, 4K and Super 35 mode. I used the RF 100-300mm f2.8 in Clog2. Graded in Premiere Pro.

Thanks Rudy!
I am very impressed how the R5 MKII tracks most of the time.
It isn't foolproof, but usually better than the fool behind the camera!

Rob,
Interesting video. Quality holds up very good. I’m assuming this is the same as crop mode in my R5 MKII? Or is it different in some way? I used crop mode with good results on my old R5, and it was oversampled. When I got the R5 mKII , I also got longer lenses so not as much need to use crop mode. I may have to give crop mode a good try out on the R5 MKII, even though it is not oversampled(I think).
Thanks for showing the examples.
Dave

Thanks Dave. This would be different than crop mode on the R5 II, crop mode would be more like the Super 35 mode on the C50. Crop mode is actually taking a part sensors exact image which would give you the better quality. Whereas the digital teleconverter is digitally enlarging the image artificially. At least that is my understanding how it works.

This amazing Bald Eagle gave me some nice views as it flies towards a fish, gets it, and then comes past me on the way to a tree to eat it.
Out of frame, it has another eagle chasing it, you can see at the end.

I was out yesterday evening filming a glorious sunset as part of my ongoing learning process for how to shoot and edit Canon C-log3 footage.
It was a Friday evening and as I watched the steady stream of cars slowly heading home in the fading light, I thought about how happy many of those folks must be knowing that after a long work week they're almost home.

Cheers,
Rudy

Seeing there is so much snow around and not much to film, I did a little footage of a few of my yard bird visitors. The bird sounds are from my yard with the Comica VM40. I used the Canon C50 with the RF 100-300mm with the 2x. All footage was manually focused using peaking. Filmed in Clog 2 and edited in Premiere. Enjoy.

Love the feel of it. I am seeing heavy purple in about the first 30 seconds, the rest looks spot on. Nice work.

Rob,
Nice winter scene video.
Does not seem as nice and sharp, except maybe the blue jay, as your non log videos.
But your normal video sets a very high bar.
Maybe the shooting conditions caused it.
Still nice to watch.

I appreciate the honest feedback Dave. Full manual is tough on these little birds. By the time you focus on them they are gone. I honestly do not know how guys do full manual focus all the time (my hero's). What the camera was struggling with was when they dipped below the snow the tracking popped off them in Auto, made for some bad clips. I personally think some detail is lost in Clog also, still learning the processing there. I honestly am not seeing the huge benefit with wildlife, as I want the exact look as I took it in anyways. That said, I am having a blast learning this camera, it is so fun. Kinda putting the stills behind it. Really like bringing them to life.

Rob,
I feel the same way on video. I never thought I would do video. Then on an older body, a few years ago, I got better results on an eagle nest with video than I got with stills, and the journey began. I was very happy to see you get interested in video and be able to see your work.

Hi Guys,

I've been following your discussions here with interest and have some things to share, especially concerning the pros and cons of using Log footage. I'm resisting making any comments right now until I've worked with C-log3 for a while longer. But one thing I'm finding for sure is that it's quite hard to make the final image look as good as non-log footage.

I still haven't had a chance to shoot or edit any birds or animals in log yet, only sunrises and sunsets, local buildings, the inside of our house and my own face. I practice on sunrises and sunsets because these are high dynamic range scenes for which log is well suited and also because they have lots of natural colours which are hard to find around here in the winter.

I estimate that I've spent somewhere around 150 hours in Davinci Resolve processing C-log3 footage so I've learned some things. I've also watched a gazillion tutorials.

Anyways, that's all for now.

Hi again Guys,

Today I got tired of shooting everything under the sun in C-log3 other than some actual real living wildlife subjects. So I drove down to the Ottawa River to a spot with some open water that always has ducks all year round. I froze my fingers to the bone in the -22 C temps with the wind chill, but I did manage to get some footage so I could see how this log footage processes in Davinci Resolve. The preliminary results in terms of exposure, colours and sharpness are encouraging.

I'm working on putting together a little demo video, but in the meantime here's a single clip to give you an idea.
The first part is what the C-log3 footage looks like unprocessed out of the camera. Next is what it looks like after converting it to Rec 709 footage in Davinci Resolve with what is called a Colour Space Transform node. The last part of the clip is the same as the second part but enlarged 150% to see how the image holds up.

The Colour Space Transform acts similar to a conversion LUT applied to the footage. There was no processing done to this log footage other than adding a touch of sharpening. I did not adjust the exposure, contrast, saturation, shadows or highlights and no noise reduction was done.

I put in couple of freeze frames so you could examine the detail at 100% size and at 150% enlargement.

The video format was 4K30 Fine (8K down sampled to 4K)

Onwards and upwards,
Rudy

Hey guys, I'm going to share a different perspective since I see some of you grinding and grinding to master the processing technique to match reality (as seen with the eye). There was a time not too long ago when it was very very difficult to capture the footage we are all capturing now, and those that could do it back then would really stand out from the others. But nowadays when it's pretty damn easy to capture this footage due to the amazing gear we have at our disposal, you will really only stand out with your storytelling/editing/processing techniques vs quality of your footage. Take your same raw footage and have 3 different people edit a story with their own styles and you get three completely different viewing experiences. Most iconic films are remembered specifically because of their deliberate non-standard processing and color science. The intention is to create a signature visual identity that's different from reality, as it creates a certain feel when viewing it. With that said, here's my personal opinion that might be very unpopular here, but it's my personal preference to view images and video that have been edited with alternate processing. I shoot RAW stills for this reason so I can edit my stills to be as far away from reality as possible, without overdoing it. Why? Because the alternate processing is what grabs me and the people I work with. And now that I'm shooting video I continue to shoot clog for the same reason, as it allows me to apply creative color science in post. To me, this is what stands out from the rest considering anyone can capture a great still or video clip with a little effort, and so it all comes down to processing/editing.

With that said I personally would enjoy all of your work more with alt processing, because it would feel different/cinematic to me than what I see every day with the naked eye.

A couple examples to illustrate where I'm coming from. Checkout the car photos of northborders instagram. These are all heavily cross processed with creative color science. He's popular not because he's good at capturing natural photo realistic images of cars, but rather how he processes the RAW files to look very different from reality, with a creative and interesting look to the eye:

https://www.instagram.com/northborders/

And here's the first wildlife video that popped up during a search that gives you the idea of alt processing in nature. I'm not promoting the tool he used but I much prefer the alt look of this type of processing compared to any natural scene. This is an extreme example, and there are probably better examples of that are less cooked, but he did a good enough job to showcase alt processing in nature. There's a bird at 8:00 and there's a scene at 12:20 that converts reality to alt processing, and the processed version is way more attractive to me:

https://youtu.be/r32lzjxklWw

Here's a few examples that are much less cooked with retro/grain/film look etc, but still heavily alt processed.
https://youtu.be/087GAGS6A4Q
https://youtu.be/ay-KbtIza4E

And here's the first comment from the 3rd film that aligns with the purpose of my post:
"I liked that you mentioned in the description that filming took 2 days, but post-production 2-3 months. I think many amateur film-makers imagine that all the work is in the filming, and it really shows. With the same acting and filming as they already did, spending that extra time on post-production would make their films as good as yours.

Well done, we hope to see more."

I'm just throwing this out there in case you want to consider chewing on it or experimenting, and not kill yourselves trying to make things look perfectly realistic. Just my 2 cents.
