Nice and peaceful video Rudy. I was like being there myself.

I still need your input on my Kenzie video with the DJI gimbal that you wanted to get back to. No rush at all, if and when you have time.

Hi Rob,

Over the last few days I have watched your Kenzie video 5 times, twice this morning alone, and to be honest I really don't know what extra feedback I was going to add when I said - "more words coming."

I remember that it was crazy-busy around here at the time and I didn't feel that could do the video justice in my initial comment. However, having rewatched it several times since I think the video is very good in all regards. Initially I thought the volume of the stream audio was a bit too loud and made the lyrics hard to discern in one section, but now it seems just fine to me.

Regarding the music track, the country-folk vibe in this song and some of your other songs is one of my favourite music styles, so I naturally really like it.

In summary, the video looks good, sounds good, keep 'em coming.

Cheers,
Rudy

Nothing special but I wanted to dust off the C50 so I grabbed some basic footage of Tree Swallows with a bonus Bluebird in our yard. I used the Comica VM40 and the DJI Mic 3 for the sounds also from my yard. I used the Canon C50 with the RF 100-300mm with the 2x. I used Super 35 mode in Clog 2.

Rob,
Nice video of your birds in your yard. The audio was really nice and natural sounding.
I went back on your YouTube page and looked at some of your 4 and 3 month old videos with the C50.
I can't put what exactly it is, but some of the older ones, seem sharper and more vibrant.Especially the Kenzie one "Kenziee with the C50".
I know this one is Super 35 and C-log, and maybe the older was in-camera Canon colors, and maybe 4k or more and not cropped, but they just seemed more special to my eye. Also maybe different lenses.
Keep them coming as they are very good, but wanted to mention that.
Dave

Both birds looked pretty chunky/puffed-up. Is it still cold in your neighborhood?

No offense (just my opinion), but I much prefer the natural sounds in this video to the music in your others.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will get off Clog for a bit and see the results. They are different lenses also with different VND filters. This video was the 100-300 with the 2x and the Kenzie video was the 70-200 Z lens. Lighting could be a factor too, Kenzie's had awesome light and yesterdays's was more overcast so maybe not as vibrant. First thing I am going to try is no Clog. We want you to like the detail Dave, you are putting a lot of pressure on me now

Wanted to add about Clog with the iPhone, I do see much better results if you want to do video with the iPhone. The cameras not so much imo.

Rob

First off I never take offense at honest feedback so thank you for that. I agree 100% about natural sounds. Unfortunately where I live on the East Coast there usually is so much noise it is hard to get natural sounds all the time. If I could I would. Even times I go shooting with others, they are talking, camera sounds, etc etc. I have a trip planned for hopefully some loons and usually early morning I can get some beautiful sounds (hopefully).

Keep the feedback coming, it is the only way I can learn and get better. I still suck at video, very different than photography but more fun for me now.

Sweet video, Rob. Excellent feather details and colours, and of course the ambient sounds are great.

Hi Rob,

Just a word about my recent findings with shooting in log, (in my case it's C-Log3, but I think they're all pretty close).

Lately, I have been filming Ducks in C-Log3 at a local pond usually on fairly bright, sunny days making these scenes high dynamic range. However, last week there was a day that was pretty overcast and when I got the footage home I couldn't get the colours to pop they way I usually could.

On closer examination in post I realized that I had underexposed all the C-Log3 clips by 2-3 stops. The colour just wasn't in there. Yet, on other overcast days when I carefully boosted the exposure to compensate for the dull light and got it right the colours popped in post. It seems like for C-Log3 anyway, it's quite easy to underexpose it yielding dull, drab footage.

Further to this story.... on that same overcast day with the same Ducks on the same pond I shot a dozen or so clips in non-Log, 8-bit Standard Picture Profile format and the colours were fabulous! That really started making me wonder whether the whole C-Log pursuit is worth all the hassle. In your case, all your cameras (R1, C50, R5ii) shoot non-log footage in 10-bit so you're golden either way.

Cheers,
Rudy

I've been out practicing with my new (bought last Fall) Weebill 3e powered mini gimbal.
What I'm trying to do is create a sense of flying or floating smoothly through the forest about 4-5 feet off the ground, something similar to flying a drone along a forest path.

For this footage I used my R5 filming at 4K120 and the RF16/2.8. I was really happy and surprised about the complete absence of Ibis wobble in this footage, which is great for such a wide angle lens shot on a full frame sensor.

Half way through (at 56 secs) I slowed down the footage to 80% of normal speed because I was walking a bit too fast. This slowed things down just enough and made the final footage even smoother. And oh yes, I stabilized the footage in Davinci which it even a bit smoother.

What do you think? How does it look? Does it work?

Cheers,
Rudy

Hey there, Dave! Great to see you!

Thanks for watching and commenting!

I haven't gotten out there lately nearly as often as I had hoped and dreamed about all winter long - we had worst and longest winter here in Ottawa in many years. As a result, we've got high water levels in the rivers and ponds which doesn't make for nice videos. Soon things should improve. In the meantime I'm practicing becoming a Gimbal Jeddi-knight! ! It's lots of fun and I think I'm starting to get the hang of this little contraption.

Have a great weekend,
Rudy

Belted Kingfishers in trees at Ted Shanks Conservation Area in Pike County, Missouri on Sunday.
The female first, and a bit later the male. At about 40 second you can hear the male making the kingfisher signature rattle sound maybe 3 times.

Finally was able to get some footage for a change. Here is the first of the season hummingbird. I used the C50 in super 35 mode. ¬ens was the RF 100-300 with the 2x. Natural sounds was with the Comica VM40 mic.
