Some miscellaneous photos of aurora from this current winter in Alaska. Colors are as the camera captured them, no saturation adjustments were made. I know aurora photos aren’t for everyone and can be repetitive, but some may enjoy. Photos taken between Fairbanks and the Brooks Range. Cheers
Wow! These are fantastic. Well composed, and excellent processing. Love how you expertly brought out the stars. You have my vote for Feb. 7 Thread of the Week.
Amazing images for sure! I've never see the Aurora so powerful and large like this. It remains on my bucket list. The colors in these are great, and seem super saturated to me. Are they this saturated to the naked eye, or it the process of a longer exposure that brings it out like this?
These are fabulous and make me want to spend some time there. Any suggestions on when to visit because it always appears to be a hit/miss as far as predictability?? Long way to travel if you don't see them.
Thanks for the kind words and welcomes to the forum; greatly appreciated.
The photos with the intense red, pinks and purples were taken during the Oct 10/11 cme impact from an X-class flare. I believe this event produced aurora seen in all 50 states. This is the most intense aurora I’ve experienced. The others were taken during much less substantial substorms; but being well into the Arctic Circle, the aurora is naturally more intense and active than even in Fairbanks locally. This area is accessible via the Haul Road (Dalton Highway).. if considering going, be sure to research the road first; it is dangerous and requires appropriate planning. The entire drive is stunning and nothing short of eye candy.
There’s no real best time. I’d say September to March. I would suggest look for a long stretch of clear skies between Fairbanks and Coldfoot and head up then. There’s no way you would miss viewing aurora. If your schedule isn’t that flexible.. I’d suggest a visit as long as possible, while as dark as possible (mid-December through February) to maximize photographing opportunities.
Cheers
Any ideas on how these were taken? Why I try to do night shots I get a lot of green cast /spots in the shadows in the raw files. I am using a Fuji GFX50R with 23-35mm lens
