My 400-800 arrived yesterday, so it and my new to me A1(returning to A1 after Nikon stint) went to my local wetlands and was treated to this female northern Harrier hunting. Tucson, AZ.

Shrinkage be calculated from the magnification. 600pf is 522mm 4m.
400-800 is 654mm at 3.5m, probably 670mm at 4m
You need a 160mm tall bird to fill the frame with the 600pf at mfd
You need a 104mm tall bird to fill the frame with the 400-800 at mfd
These numbers are really helpful and align with my experience using the two lenses. Of course: You can (and I almost always do) use the 1.4X TC on the 600mm PF for an 840mm f9 and that should just about even up the bird size to fill frame.
On a side note, at least for the copy I had, the Nikon 800mm PF was not nearly as sharp as the 400-800 or the 600mm PF with 1.4X when shooting near the MFD of the 800 mm PF. Lens looked fine at distance, but the 800mm pf would definitely not be my lens of choice near the MFD. At least that was the case for the copy I tested and returned.
