p.1 #1 · Rocker Chick- My first outdoor session of Spring 2025
Last week we had an unusually warm day for March in my area, hitting 76 degrees, so my friend Jessica and I took the opportunity for an impromptu photo session. She had just gotten a new haircut reminiscent of Joan Jett, and I couldn’t pass up the chance to capture it. For anyone curious, she is the same model featured in this thread, except in these photos her real hair is showing instead of a wig.
Jessica is deeply connected to emo culture, which is something I also identify with. While the scene has evolved since its peak in the 2000s, many of us who grew up with it have embraced a more refined version of the style as we’ve gotten older. The bold, exaggerated aesthetics of the past have softened, but the essence remains. I love shooting outdoor portraits in the spring blossoms, and I especially enjoy creating a visual contrast by blending the dark, moody elements of emo with soft, airy lighting and vibrant blooms. Here are two of my favorite shots from the session. The out of focus blossoms in the foreground were an intentional choice for the first shot.
Canon 5D MKIII, Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II lens, lit using natural light and a white circular reflector.

"Rocker Chick" or not, Jessica rocks the Joan Jett look. I absolutely love that first image, those eyes, those lips, that nose.
I can't believe that the same model is in both sessions.

A very lovely image Daniel with great impact, not easy to do. Long live shallow depth of field, could there possibly exist emo images without it? Beautiful work.

Thank you so much. Yes, she looks VERY different between the two looks. Personally I prefer the look in these photos.

Thank you so much Derek. Yes, long live shallow depth of field! That dreamy look is one of my favorites in portrait photography. I don't care how much it bothers some photographers; I like it, so I'll continue to do it.

Daniel, my jaw dropped when I viewed the first image!...and STAYED open for the 2nd!!!
Your mastery of processing images is masterful! Everything is sharp, crisp.....bringing out the best in your models. Your masterful grasp of background, light, position of the subject, position of the camera and color, and all with a vintage dslr!!!, shows how well you present your photography! Just an extension of your "mind's eye"!
Just fantastic brother!

Thanks Gary!
Lol, I just tend to become friends with many of the people I work with and photograph. This was my third time photographing this model. One session was paid, and after that we became friends and have since done a couple of these "artistic" shoots as well, just because we wanted to make something.

I believe if we thought it all about the money, photography/photographers would have failed centuries ago brother!
It is supposed to be fun right? If we make a few denaro..heh..that is great!!!

Thank you so much Dan! This was such a kind thing of you to say. I work hard to make my photos look good, so seeing a response like this makes the hard work very gratifying.

The dreamy feeling I get from looking at these photos is crazy. Using the sunlight as a hair or rim light just adds to it. She becomes an emo angel. Fantastic shots as always!
