p.1 #1 · Spirit of the Old West

Last evening, I set out with a vision to capture a Western landscape that includes a human presence—not just for scale, but to evoke a sense of mystery and narrative, echoing the spirit of the Old West.

Interesting idea. I hope he finds his horse.

I think you might just have succeeded, Scott!
I also think if he was leading a horse, it would be even stronger.

The Western landscape holds so much beauty and history, and incorporating a human element can truly enhance the storytelling aspect.

Thank you Douglas, a horse would have been great! But that would have been tricky in this location. This bluff was above some railroad tracks with no real access and I picked this location that I was familiar with so I could shoot up at the red rocks and wanted the figure up against an open sky area. I'm actually the cowboy figure in this shot. I first scouted the area above for specifically a perfect area to stand, then left a tree branch where I wanted to be, went back down and set up the camera, manually focusing on the spot where I would stand and left the branch. Then set up a couple warm-balanced lights out of view to add dimension and give off warm light as if a campfire were glowing off in the distance, then set up the camera for interval shooting then did a series of different poses and facing different directions while I photographed all through blue hour. It was challenging because I was battling strong wind which was blowing incessantly. The oil lantern flame kept blowing out and my hat kept blowing away, but in the end I was pleased with how the shots turned out. The one I posted was one of my favorites but there are a few others I like as well.
