I shot with Canon RF for about a year and a half (after shooting with Sony for 5 years) and ended up picking up a Z5 on a whim to shoot with it. Ultimately I ended up liking the Nikon lens lineup more and loved the files for landscape work. After shooting the summer with a Z7 II (returned the Z5 for it), I dove full in and sold all my Canon gear about two months later.
I still overall like Nikon’s lens lineup (plus access to third party glass and Sony glass via adapter) and have really enjoyed the quality. I’ve been on the Nikon side for two years now and have no intentions of heading back to Canon or Sony.

Any former canon R system users here?
If yes, why??
I go back with Canon to 1987 when I sold my Nikon film gear for the Canon EF USM lenses. Shot with Canon for over 30 years including up until the R5, R7, and R3. Switched to Nikon 2+ years ago for the PF lenses. While it took some time to get used to the ergonomics and heavier bodies, I am reasonably happy. The AF isn't as good as Canon and I still miss my EF primes but all is well on the dark side.

100% this!
From the time EOS R3 was announced in 2021, Canon had no flagship camera until the R1 in November 2024. Many shooters like the R1 despite the stacked sensor and 24 mp file size, but the RF lenses are expensive, in limited supply and easy to criticize. Rumor sites have been rattling off reports of new Canon super telephotos and super zoom lenses that never make it to market.

I think that this really depends on the use case. As one example, Canon AF has issues in low light and backlit situations compared to Sony and Nikon.
As far as canonrumors goes, this isn't a rumor site, it's a marketing site designed to keep Canon users hoping for the quick arrival of the next great thing. Most of them never make it and when they make it it usually takes at least one more year than initially reported. Among the xxxrumors.com sites, only Canonrumors is ran by a different team and their motivation is very clearly not to provide reliable information.

Aren’t all forums basically “ marketing “ tools? This one included??
Forums, regardless of the hobby are place to tell, gush, show others what you have. That in turn leads to curiosity, envy even jealousy, which in turn leads to dissatisfaction with what the reader currently uses. Forums basically spread the word of new and emerging models.
Let’s be honest if forums didn’t exist most would still be pig ignorant and probably still be using and more importantly getting good results from older models.
I have a few varying hobbies, visit forums and all seem to “push” new models emerging by word of mouth, thus total strangers we’ve never met but yet believe !
It’s very subtle, but my god it’s also a very very powerful marketing tool.
Online forums are a marketing teams dream, simply release a snippet, then sit back and watch as forums go into a frenzy building up excitement and anticipation, by the time the new model is ready for release thousands will have already decided it must be bought.

Agreed! GAS! But please check out the wonderful Nikon lens line up. Canon users would like to have those useful and powerful lenses to actually take photos with. Unfortunately, you can't shoot photos with Canon rumors.

I'm not sure but, I think you are asking if " ... any professional or semi professional photographers..." switched to Nikon from Cannon. I would also ask if they " ... any professional or semi professional photographers..." could prove they are " ... any professional or semi professional photographers...".
I'm sure you'll have no answer... or just a regular "bull shxt". The answer to you question is no, and it has nothing to do with which system is better but how much you are invested $$$ in your current setup. Switch is very expensive, photographers do not make a lot of money. Those that have multiple systems are very reach retirees, none of them making or used to make money by taking pictures. You can see tons of them here (God bless you all reach bastards! ) few of them are very advanced photographers, but again "those that do not work for money do not know what the work(photography) is..."

I shot RF for about 1 1/2 years before coming to Nikon. I primarily shoot 2 things, wildlife and my kids. Nikon offers me “affordable” options that satisfy me in the 600 PF and the 50 1.8s.
I like fast 50s and 35s and I wasn’t happy with what Canon offered natively. Ultimately it was the 200-800 that got me to switch. Great lens for the money and I enjoyed it, but Canon didn’t offer anything to step up to in my price bracket.
Ergonomically I do prefer the Z8 to my old R5, but I do miss having 3 control dials on the body.
A stacked R7 with a 100-500 could possibly tempt me back from a wildlife standpoint, so long as Canon didn’t nerf the body. The only real negative there for me is the zoom throw. I think for shots of the kids I’ll keep a Nikon as I’m beyond happy with the results

Casting your net for ?
You’ve not indicated why you’re looking, what types of photography you want to pursue with Nikon, etc. What is Canon not providing that you are looking for in a Nikon? Let’s get some “meat” into this discussion. The more detailed the questions, the better the answers!

You are the one that is screaming forums are just marketing tools and I just called you out as a great example of this with your herd of dozens of cameras.

I don't think the OP is actually looking for answers... just a soapbox.

I’ve been a canon user for more than 30yrs
EF, EF-s, EF-m and recently dipped my toe with a pair of cheap R models and several RF lenses
2yrs ago I wanted a change so bought a Pentax K5 and K3
The ergonomics are amazing, the rear screen is fantastic, the colours are to die for, the lenses are gorgeous… the problem is the AF is constantly hit & miss…constantly.
But those colours!!!!
Now when I look at my canon pictures they seem….flat??
I’ve never shot with Nikon. But having seen a few YouTube videos I’m now intrigued.
Canon have lost me, game over!!! I bought into all their systems and they basically killed each one off. The last straw was the ef-m line
I honestly loved it, small, compact but none were weather sealed, it needed a flagship… but canon killed it off. So I have vowed not to buy any more canon.
Pentax (Ricoh) just doesn’t have the might of either Nikon or canon.
My son has now grown up, no longer wants dad taking snaps of him. So for me photography is basically whatever takes me eye. I estimate that 90-95% are deleted. But I get enjoyment of being out and snapping away… always JPEG’s
Never shot raw in my life, and no desire to start either.

Then you are wrong!!
I’m currently switching between Pentax k3/k5 and canon ef/efs dslr
I’m pretty bored with canon, love the Pentax but the AF accuracy is way below canon
I’ve never owned a Nikon
Been watching a fair few YT videos and I like what I see
Whether I make a move I just don’t know??
But I’m certainly curious
👍🏻
There are a lot of differences between DSLR and mirrorless cameras. If most of your experience is with DSLRs, the best thing to do is rent a mirrorless camera for a few days. A Z50 II (ASP-C sensor) or Z6III (full frame sensor) would be a middle of the road with respect to cost, features and similar resolution to the K-3. Rent one with a 27-70mm f/4 zoom.
p.1 #19 · At risk of being hunted down and murdered…
Severe GAS and Compulsive Buying Disorder sufferer here. I've owned them all, and they're all great for different reasons.
On mirrorless bodies, Nikon's AF on the Expeed 7 bodies is fantastic. You won't miss anything from the Sony or Canon bodies, as long as you're comparing similar price ranges. I find the Z5 II AF slightly better than the R6 II and about the same as the A7 IV, and I have extensive shooting experience with all three. That's pretty impressive since the Z5 II a lot cheaper. If I was shooting the Olympics, I'd get an A9 III, but I'm not.
In addition to the bodies, Nikon's lenses seem to punch WAY above their weight in each price category too. I'd highly recommend a Z5 II or Z6 III and a Z 50mm f/1.8 S to start. All three are the best anywhere near their price categories IMHO.
EDIT: Since you said you're a JPEG shooter and uninterested in RAW, a bonus is that Nikon bodies output fantastic JPEGs.
p.1 #20 · At risk of being hunted down and murdered…
I own and shoot both systems, but have tons more Canon gear. I've shot Canon most of my 20+ year photography journey. Canons 1 series bodies are the best in my opinion. I shoot almost all my wildlife now on Nikon for the resolution and those beautiful, unmatched ,TC super-teles. The Z9 is lacking In the speed and EVF department, but I'm patiently waiting for a 30-40 FPS Z9 II
The R1 is hands doe the best camera I've ever used but it could use more resolution. I like Canons smaller zooms better than Nikon...the 24-70 and 70-200 etc. The 24-105 2.8 is also awesome.
I still own and shoot my DSLR stuff alot. 1dx iii / 1Ds III
