I just bought a refurbished Nikon 35mm 1.4 Z from Nikon. After a few days of acquiring, I decided to try the lens control ring at the base. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be responding right on both cameras I own (Z50 II and Z5).
I believe my settings are correct. In custom menu I have the control ring programmed to aperture control on both cameras. On the Z50II it is set to high response under sub menu F11 (I've tried low as well).
Anyway, I get several outcomes when I power either camera on with this lens. Most tries result in no response when moving the lens control ring. There have been a few attempts where the ring would respond but only after sitting on either camera with the power on for at least 1min or more. Once I powered down and right back on though it most often would be back to not responding.
Nikon has already issued me a return label but I was hoping to not have to return it. Z50 II is on firmware 1.00 and Z5 1.43. I've read through the Z5's most recent firmware and I see nothing that would suggest it's a firmware issue.
Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue and perhaps I'm missing something.
I called Nikon support just to make sure I wasn't missing anything. It does appear to be a communication issue with the lens and not a settings or camera firmware related issue.
Bummer as I really like the lens. I have the 35mm 1.8 S as well but this one is kind of different.
I'm still interested to hear if anyone else has had problems with Nikon Z lens control rings. If anything, make sure to check this function if you buy one before the return window is closed. I almost forgot to check as I prefer to just use the command dials for adjustments most of the time.
