It was with great sadness that I learned that a good friend, fellow musician and band mate passed away at 84 in Rochester, NY.
Charles Frank Mangione was an American flugelhorn player, trumpeter and composer. Mangione came to prominence as a member of Art Blakey's band in the 1960s, and later co-led the Jazz Brothers with his brother, Gap, achieving international success in 1978 with his jazz-pop.
I was a "session bassist" at the re-occuring Capital Jazz Fest music festivals here in N.Va(WolfTrap), Merriweather Post Pavilion and Ft Meade, MD for many years.
My next door neighbor was Scott Ambush of Spyro Gyra and I "sat in" for Scott when he played piano here in Frederick, Md@Wienberg Center for the Arts.
RIP and rock on my brother! This was in 1999.
Nice pic! great story about you and him. I remember listening to him when I was younger as my mom would spin his records. I distinctly remember "Feels So Good". It has stayed with me all these years. The guy is immortal. RIP!

Joel
Joel..THANKS..That is exactly the song he was playing for this pic.
It is his "premier song".
Thanks again!

It’s a time for reflection and to look at what they accomplished. Their lives were very full and provided positive direction for generations of kids! You can’t leave a better legacy than that!
I’m going to listen to the entire Children of Sanchez album tomorrow. Personally, I consider it Chuck’s best work!
Dan, that is a sad loss. I listened to “Feels So Good” this morning as a reminder and I absolutely loved the sound of his flugelhorn. It’s very cool you played with him and others! Great photo you made of him in 1999.

.
Chuck, Hulk Hogan, Ozzy, all in one week, gone.
Could this be a premonition Bill?
Hope not. Yeah I am in the "twilight" of my life but the passing of these icons seems to remind me more of my mortality.

You have great taste Larry! I enjoyed Chuck's 2 album's where Esther Satterfield sang, Her voice was multi dimensional and it added some great variations to Chuck's musical note progressions!
Dan..Thanks!

Thank you Ross! That was my most favorite of his many songs!
I was lucky in the musicians I grew up with in the Maryland DC area. This area had beaucoup musical talent! Most were VERY generous in allowing other members to "sit in" during their gigs.
