With thousands of birds gathering on Nickerson Beach, Long Island, NY I like to do both individual portraits and to capture the large numbers in photos. For some of these photos I've use a colony of terns as the background with them out of focus with bokeh to create an interesting background hinting at how many there are.

Great shots! We have some of those terns visit up here in the New England area. They are very fast birds particularly when diving.

Great Shots Morris. We have the mostly Caspian Terns up her on Lake Ontario as well as on the rivers however, I have never seen a skimmer.
