The C50 moniker might be a bit too similar to the r50v and R50 names.

That's what CanonRumors was calling it, although, not official.

Updated with pictures. Curious if the specs/internals are based on the upcoming R6 III.

Now that would be nice - most especially if it means that the shared sensor gets a competitive read speed lowering the rolling shutter

Should hear about it tonight, if not tomorrow... apparently. I'd imagine full frame, but we'll see

This looks like a terrific video/hybrid camera! I'm surprised there is not more excitement and commentary about it. I suppose that is an indication of the low level of interest in video in the FM forums.
Regardless, Canon has raised the bar and it will be interesting to see what videographers produce, and how other brands react.

Interesting that both Nikon and Canon are releasing a cinema styled body within days of each other. Interestingly, Nikon took a whole different approach with a massive screen, but no internal fans? Look how thin it is. So glad there are more options in this category

Agreed, it sounds like it will be the best hybrid camera to date with video being the primary focus. I'm curious how the AF in stills mode stacks up to the 'R series.

Welp-

The C50 was cool for about 12 hours-

The Nikon ZR would seem to be a much better value proposition at almost half the price-

This coming from a full Canon owner- lame-

You're thinking that anything beyond the launch date makes them comparable? They're different tools for different uses.

I don't think they're necessarily in the same tier. I'm going to compare them to Sony, because obviously that's who they're gunning for:

The C50 is taking aim at the FX3 (though I'd say it's more in line with the FX2).
The ZR strikes me as more of a ZV-E1 alternative.

However, the ZR is a lot more interesting (at a crazy price) and absolutely stole the C50's thunder. It's almost like people forgot the C50 dropped yesterday and now the ZR is all they're talking about.

(Probably didn't help Canon that they chose to announce on iPhone reveal day, of all days.)

I'm looking forward to seeing more in-depth, long-ish term reviews on both of these.

The Canon R50 is far more of a professional's camera than the Zr. Let's get that out there. The Zr lacks countless features that a pro would want. It's still packed with features at an unbeatable price, but, its a carry over sensor/features from the Z6 III where has the C50 is basically ground up new, with a new sensor. I could call the Zr a top tier vlogger camera or entry level cinema camera, but the FX3 and C50 are different altogether.

For most, the MicroSD, no open-gate, no full HDMI, no redundant recording, no 1/4 20 body mounts, poor placement of memory cards if on tripod is a sticking point, even though the price may be great.

I get this is a Canon Forum-

It’s ok that Canon isn’t the best right now. I owned the Canon C80 for over a year and shot it extensively. I understand what is necessary for a pro body-

I would take 32 bit Audio and IBIS over everything you mentioned in a compact body- Even ProRes and RedRaw codec support- I’m sorry, Canon was out paced the day of launch by a camera half its price.

Canon is driving some great lens designs but they are missing the mark completely with its bodies.

Lots of un happy people in the R5Mark 2 with its 4K60 oversampled subtraction- They are missing the mark here again with this body unfortunately.

More people are going to jump ship to Nikon- It is what it is. Wake up Canon- The market is starting to pass you by with your bodies

Really disappointed from a would have been buyer- I am not dropping 4K on thiscamera. I am better off buying a Nikon ZR, a 35 1.4, 50 1.4 and 85 1.8 for 400 bucks more. Really un impressed Canon

Even with all the hate in this thread I preordered one. Seems like a sweet little camera. Brand new sensor design, photo capable, the top with intergraded audio inputs and built in rocker. I use the Comica VM40 mic which already has 32 bit float built in, so this will be perfect. All my lenses I use for video have IS so no IBIS again no big deal. I will never understand why you all compare different brands and bash them. Look at the specs you want and buy it, simple. They all have pros and cons. I think Canon did a great job with this body. I am looking forward to giving it a try. I was thinking a C80 but glad I held off now.

I do not feel this is an FX3 killer nor is the ZR a C50 killer, they are all good if they fit your needs. I do not see any reason why someone would switch brands with any of the 3. The eco system you are in seems highly capable. Congrats to all of us having so many options and choices out there.

Hope you enjoy the camera!

Also it’s not hate, it’s a real reaction to a camera release from someone that has the budget and is the target market for this camera.

I actually think the C50 looks like a great camera that fills the Canon video/cinema model gap nicely. If I were currently in the market, I’d probably get one.

And overall a better-spec’d, more professional camera than the ZR. Just didn’t get as much fanfare due to the price difference, the “RED factor”, timing, and different marketing approaches.

Nikon was a lot more aggressive about getting the YouTube shillfluencer hype machine running. Canon’s rollout just seemed quieter.

I agree, neither of them is the groundbreaking release that would make anyone switch systems. But great options for anyone already in an ecosystem looking for a relatively compact, video-centric hybrid.

This is good for everyone.

Now let’s see what Sony does.
