p.1 #1 · Discontinued? TTArtisan M-Z 6-Bit Adapter Ring

I was about to list my TTArtisan M-Z 6-Bit Adapter Ring as I moved back to sony and when searching for it online it looks like B&H lists it as discontinued. Out of stock everywhere including TTArtisans site. I'm wondering if Leica applied patent pressure. I guess I should hang on to it in case I go back to Nikon as it's a killer accessory to enable focus conf on any lens.

There's a somewhat new M to Sony E 6-bit adapter II, so I don't really know if it's a Leica-induced issue...

I hope so, mine has been rock solid on my Z7, but it's flaky on my Z5II (keeps deciding to report as a 135/2.8)

One of mine had the 6-bit reader cover glass crack. It read as a few different lenses no matter what was mounted. I've also had a healthy adapter send various readings because of lenses with dirty mounts. The reader overrides the wheel, so it's an issue if it's broken or fooled.

Hopefully they release one without the 6-bit reader, because it's really just been a headache on an otherwise solid adapter.

Regarding the 6-bit reader strip- I cut a thin piece of electrical tape to block it then use the manual wheel to select the closest focal length.

I sold mine after deciding I most likely won't be using rangefinder glass on my ZF, and also after just a few days of use realizing how easy it was to bump the manual wheel, throwing off exif data and (in theory?) the IBIS/Focal Length settings.

In my case I can make it work by simply switching bodies, but I've checked everything and see no issues if it's on the Z7, it's only misbehaving on the Z5ii.

I agree, I'd love to see a non-6bit version with just the wheel. For now I'm going to get a dumb adapter for the Z5ii and give up subject detection in MF for reliable EXIF/IBIS from Non-CPU lens data.

The 6-bit reader also utterly hates the old Voigtlander brass LTM to M adapter I have on my beloved Nikkor-S.C 5cm f1.4 LTM, and reads it as a 75mm (it's not coded, just picks that up off the brass part of the adapter.)

A not too user friendly but more precise solution is to get a Neewer adapter and a M to Sony E adapter. Use the firmware update cable to update the adapter's .txt file to the focal length you most often use. Then get LensTagger lightroom plugin (or if you are comfortable using terminal, get exiftool via homebrew for Mac users). That way, you can have the IBIS at the correct focal length when shooting. You will get all of the focus assist tool Nikon has to offer: rangefinder indicator, green box focus confirmation. You can also adjust the aperture to match your lens' aperture when shooting. You then update the lens name after you upload picture to lightroom. You will have all the lens information: lens name and shooting aperture. There is a f9 "reverse rings for focus", which you can adjust so your focus indicator can match your lens focus direction. There is also a13 "focus point selection speed", I will turn it to "high", so the eye focus point can show up more quickly (but less precise). These setups enhance my shooting experience with the ZF/Z8 greatly. I had firmware issue with my TTartisan adapter, so it won't work with my ZF and Z8. Since my current setup is vastly better, there is no need for me to hunt down another TTartisan adapter.

I use this and generally agree with the caveat that the txt will override IBIS and Non-CPU lens data so you can’t really change lenses.

There are few on Ebay, I saw one selling one for over $200 which is joke.
The TTArtisan M-Z 6-Bit is only available on some specific Chinese's website nowadays.

Tangentially, it's WILD that Nikon has given us such a robust non-cpu setup and yet they don't use that data for dumb lenses on some adapters. There's absolutely no reason we need 6 bit adapters now, and moreover, they could easily give us focus confirmation on the Zf even with dumb lenses on dumb adapters if they'd just treat the non-cpu data as gospel. You can even "change" the aperture now that is sent to the EXIF, meaning you wouldn't even need an aperture feeler for old dumb lenses to get focus confirmation.

Very frustrating.

Doubly annoying with the introduction of the ZR.
So many cine lenses are manual focus, and without any electronic contacts.

I started with the Thypoch M-Z adapter to make use of my existing lenses, but bought with the allure of black Friday discounts, the Voigtländer 28/1.5 and 40/1.2 Z native versions primarily to get focus confirmation.

p.1 #18 · Discontinued? TTArtisan M-Z 6-Bit Adapter Ring

Long-time experience with the TTartisan M-Z 6bit adapter for Nikon Z.

I have owned it for several years and recently bought another copy, mostly using them on a Nikon Z6 with Kolari ultra-thin sensor glass conversion. I also have the Techart TZM-01 autofocus adapter, but for my use, the ability to record the used aperture is more important than having the wrong aperture in EXIF and autofocus.

Until recently, I have almost always just used the focal length selection dial on the M-Z 6bit adapter, because most lenses are or have been Voigtländers: 28mm Ultron II and Nokton, 50mm Nokton f/1.0 and f/1.2, 75mm f/1.5 Nokton, and recently the 90mm Apo-Ultron. However, since the lowest available focal length on the dial is 28mm, and I also have the Voigtländer 15mm f/4.5 III, I needed to encode that lens. I found out that the 16-21mm Tri-Elmar code tells IBIS and EXIF that it's a 16mm f/4 lens, so close enough. Having the 90mm Apo-Summicron-M, I have seen that the 6-bit encoding worked properly and has benefits over just using the dial.

One stand-out advantage having coded lenses on the TTartisan M-Z 6bit adapter is that you can select apertures above f/5.6, like f/8 or f/11. On non-coded lenses, the adapter won't let you go beyond f/5.6. This was the most important feature that made me decide to encode all my lenses. The other was to be able to distinguish my Nokton 50mm f/1.0 from similar spec'ed f/1.2 lens, and the 28mm Ultron II from the Thypoch Simera 28mm f/1.4 (while I had both).

After selling the Voigtländer 28mm Nokton and getting the Simera, I wanted to encode that as 28mm Summilux-M. It seemed I couldn't get the 6-bit code correctly, because the adapter didn't read the code. That made me buy the Akara Labs 6-bit encoder, but after applying the 28mm Summilux-M code on the Simera lens, I was still out of luck. Thinking about it, I thought I could try upgrading the firmware from V1.01 to V1.02. That made the difference. The adapter now correctly recognizes the lens as a 28mm f/1.4 Asph lens. Granted, it says "Summicron-M 28mm f/1.4 Asph" in EXIF instead of Summilux-M, but the focal length and max aperture are correctly communicated to the camera.

Encoding my 50mm f/1.2 Nokton still didn't read either, even after firmware update. In EXIF, the adapter continues to write "Leica M 50mm f/1.0". Apparently, the reissue of the 50mm f/1.2 Noctilux-M isn't in the TTartisan adapters database. Luckily, after encoding the Nokton 50mm f/1.0 as Noctilux-M f/1.0, that 6-bit code is correctly read, including lens name in EXIF. So, as it is, I can see that it's the Nokton f/1 lens when I used that one, and when using the Nokton 50mm f/1.2, the adapter will read as if there is no 6-bit code, indirectly telling me it's the f/1.2 lens. As a consequence, I can't record apertures in EXIF above f/5.6 with that lens. To me, that's not a huge deal, since I rarely or never stop down below f/5.6 with that lens.

In order to distinguish the 90mm Apo-Ultron from the Apo-Summicron-M, I chose the regular 90mm Summicron-M 6-bit code for the Voigtländer lens. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the lens name is also called "Apo-Summicron-M 90mm f/2 Asph" in the TTartisan adapter firmware, even though it's a totally different 6-bit code! Someone in the software team at TTartisan was sloppy there, so now I won't know which 90mm lens was used, at least not based on EXIF data.

When using the 90mm Apo-Summicron-M lens with the TTartisan M-Z 6bit adapter, there is unfortunately mechanical vignetting in the corners from the black-painted ring inside the adapter, which obviously has a too small opening when using a lens with relatively large rear lens element well away from the sensor. With focus at infinity, that extra darkening of the corners from the adapter is present all the way from f/2 to f/5.6.

It's a pity the TTartisan M-Z 6bit adapter is sold out, and I don't have high hopes for firmware updates for that reason.

Thank you for verifying!

As far as I’ve read - the only way to get the focus confirmation with non-chipped lenses now is to use a Neewer/Funmount ETZ Adapter and program it for the lens you use via the USB adapter cable. Am I right in that assumption or are there any other ways?

It’s a real pitty as it would just need a firmware function to set the lens data manually - which would be the same as a fake chipped lens…. With this function the Nikon Z would be almost perfect for adapted manual lenses.
