Any other lenses for Sony that render like the Sigma i Series 45mm f2.8, a lens with especially lovely rendering due to designed-in spherical abberations and other factors?

I am especially interested in autofocus lenses and lenses with a native FE mount. But I would love to hear about any similar-rendering lenses.

I also think the rendition of the Sigma 45mm f/2.8 is lovely. Plus, if you stop it down to f/8, it is actually bitingly sharp, sharp enough for landscape purposes on 61MP sensor. I don't encounter AF issues that some folks reported. Do we just get tired of it and it is no longer the flavor of the month, uh, year, maybe? Why do we want to look for another one since it is excellent, small and inexpensive 😜, Peter? I would suggest to use the lens to its full potential and enjoy it...

Hi Joshua.

I think you misunderstood me just a little bit; perhaps I did not express myself clearly!

I am not at all tired of the Sigma 45/2.8! Quite the opposite. That lens is almost always on one of my main camera bodies, and it was one of the only primes that I chose to take with me on a very long trip recently. It is my favorite lens.

I am simply looking for other lenses, presumably of other focal lengths and maximum apertures, that render similarly or as beautifully. One of my own nominations would be the Canon 50mm f1.2 L, which also has uncorrected spherical abberations that yield a very special look.

BTW, like you I have not had autofocus difficulties with this lens since the A9 and later autofocus systems.

It's very niche, but the Sony 100STF. A lens with limitations, but what it does, it does without compare. My thoughts and some sample photos here:

I like the 100STF too. How does it compare to the new 100mm macro, which some like for the bokeh?

I would like one like this too. Faster than the Siggy though. Say f1.8 at a minimum. The Voigt 40mm 1.2 would be the most obvious choice but I'd like AF.

There is the solution of a nicely rendering modern lens of the users choice with a black mist filter on it. I've yet to try whether this cheat will work. I have a feeling it will not give the the same rendition of 3D shapes that a lens with the SA built in can but will it do well enough?

Hi Peter, yes, I misunderstood you. Just by a little bit but enough for me to write and post my response. Here is to the small, light and yet, big in performance and inexpensive lens then!

No, it doesn't work that way. Those filters slightly reduce contrast but they primarily affect highlights. While I'm very happy with my black mist and white diffusion filters, they don't change a lens' rendering.

Maybe the Sirui 85/1.4?

The review is good but they didn't test AF speed. I found the AF is pretty good for my use. But it isn't super fast. People jogging, fast jogging at least, towards you means the lens barely gets it right at f/1.4 and f/2.

There are samples at the Sirui thread here: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1897586/
At page 3-4 you have GMPhotography's images taken at Big bronco and at page 5 you have images taken by cameraman72 and more taken by me.
It's not a bad lens at all!

You misunderstood me, what I meant was to use the filter to replicate SA effect alone. Or is the SA affecting the rendition of shapes also?

Incidentally thanks for the link, I hadn't seen a comparison of the Tiffen and Moment filters before.

This will probably (certainly) not work. The filter should be placed after the lens. ARRI have designed their "Signature" lens to be used with back filters in order to create effects like this.

By the way, I'm also a fan of the Sigma 2.8/45 and also interested in other lenses with the same rendering.

This lens has 2 personality : at close distance (dreamy look) of far distance (bokeh). For me, the second case is what I'm looking for in other lenses.

around that size, with a normal focal length, and with native AF...

I don't think so. Sigma 35 f2 comes close.

If you remove the size comparison, I like the f1.4 ZAs, 24 GM, and the 50 f1.2 GM.

If you remove the normal focal length, I like the Sigma 65, Batis 85.

If you remove the native AF, there could be a few. I have been curious about using a Pentax 31/1.8 adapted.

The mentioned GM STF is good but I felt the Laowa 105mm f2 STF always paired well with the Sigma.

I have and love both the Sigma 45 and the Voigtlander 40. One of the two is always on my A7C to form my go-anywhere kit. I grab the Sigma when I know I will need AF, but the VC comes with in almost every other instance, especially when I want the extra speed.

The new TTArtisans 40mm has been well-received and I believe there is some talk in the corresponding thread about how it renders similarly to the Sigma in some situations. Seems like it could be the perfect compromise between the 45i and the VC40, offering speed, size, AF, and rendering. Mine is in the mail right now and I'm excited to see how all three compare.

If you're looking for smooth/soft bokeh, as others stated the 100GM STF is even better than the Sigma 45i.

The only other similar lens that comes to mind is the RX1's 35/2 zeiss lens. I've heard it suggested the smooth bokeh rendering on this lens is also due to the combination with the built-in leaf shutter.

I've tried a ton of these lenses mentioned, and I currently shoot the CV40 with TAP adapter for AF. The VM version rendering is not as smooth in the corners as native mount (a compromise to get AF), but f1.2 provides quite a substantially different look that I prefer over the 45i. I have a comparison with the 45i and CV40 below that some may find interesting/helpful that I did when I owned the e-mount version:

Sigma 45i @2.8

Voigtlander 40 Nokton e-mount @2.8

Voigtlander 40 Nokton e-mount @1.2
