In Japan the Nikon Z version's availability has been a bit strange, Map Camera marked it as Sold Out from launch day and hasn't been taking new orders and Fujiya Camera marked it as backordered maybe 1 day after launch (very unusual), but some small online stores show in-stock status. Some Japanese Twitter user wrote that it appears as been set on "sales hiatus" based on info at Akihabara Yodobashi Camera. Not many Japanese user reports seen yet with Z, but there seem to be some.
Maybe it's too popular and many major shops sold out initial volumes immediately and don't know yet when new supplies would come or there is some kind of other supply limitation.
My Voigtlander 40mm Septon for Nikon Z arrived yesterday from CameraQuest. Wow. This may be my new favorite combo. The form factor and size is perfect on the ZR in my opinion. I don’t have example shots worth sharing yet, but I’m amazed at the center sharpness at minimum focus distance…just as Fred’s review showed. Build quality is solid, focus ring is perfectly dampened, and the aperture clicks are solid. I’ll certainly try it on my ZF, but it will live on my ZR the majority of the time!
Hello everyone,
This is my first post on FM, and it's about the Septon... I'm considering buying it, primarily for landscapes at f/8. I know there are other sharper 40mm lenses with less field curvature, but I like its rendering - less sterile and "digital" than other lenses. Among the many excellent photos in this thread and that I've seen elsewhere, landscapes taken at f/8 and infinity or mid-focus distance- with trees, mountains, etc. in the background - are rare. If anyone has the opportunity to take such photos and share them, I'd be extremely grateful.
I'm also curious whether the Voigtlander Ultron 75mm f/1.9 MC would be a good companion for the Septon - that is, does it have a similar rendering and character for landscapes?
does the length and weight of the Septon hast a meaningful impact when it comes to weight distribution on the camera compared to the Nokton 40mm 1.2?
I own the Nokton, love the output but often times grab smaller/lighter lenses for travel (for example the 26mm Nikkor). Currently non of my local camera stores have the Septon listet. Would like to get feedback from someone who used both if a “downgrade” would make sense when weight/dimension is prioritized or if the difference is negligible.

I have Sony E-mount versions of Septon (165g) and 40/1.2 SE (340g) and I used to have original 40/1.2 E-mount version (420g). The differences are quite big with the E-mount versions, especially between Septon and the original 40/1.2, which is the version that remains in production. Septon is small and light enough to be a suitable "Every Day Carry" type of lens, especially with smaller Sony bodies like my A7CII.
However, since it seems you are a Nikon user, I think you are interested in the differences between Z-mount versions where Septon is 205g and Nokton 40/1.2 is 351g based on current information on Cosina's product page. I remember seeing Z-mount 40/1.2 weight stated as 320g in Cosina's website before, but maybe it was wrong info as now it's clearlly stated as 351g in both Japanese and English versions of their product page. I would guess that the difference is still quite noticeable and the length difference wlll be 32mm for Septon and 53.9mm for Nokton... However, I have no personal experience with the Nikon Z versions and I think it will also depend on the camera body to some extent.
Very nice. How would you rate the Septon's character compared to the Ultron SLII in wide shots at f5.6-f11 apertures - including corner sharpness, curvature and distortion?

I havent realy used it past F5.6 so far. Will check it out.
So many great samples, keep them coming guys. I ended up picking up this lens as well, so I will be sharing some more samples too. I really like the rendering, it definitely has a unique character to it.

Great.
Fred, if you can, a few landscapes shots f8-11 please + crops of the light-shadow boundary with these apertures.
I am about to decide to buy it for my Nikon ZR.
I’m really on the fence about this one. I have the Sony 40/2.5, but I’d like something a little faster as a small walkaround lens in Europe. Has anyone compared the CV 35/1.5 Nokton to the 40/2 Septon on a stock Sony?
I would pick up this lens/something like this if the manual focus assist on Sony was better, e.g. like Nikon's or even Canon's. For Sony, I rely on AF.

FWIW, I haven’t found the manual focus confirmation on the Zf or the ZR to be perfectly accurate, at least at f/1.2-1.8. I still regularly use magnify to ensure focus if it needs to be precise.

I haven't compared them directly but I used to have the CV 35/1.5 Nokton (used it on stock Sony only) and I have the Septon (E-mount) since it was released. 35/1.5 adapts reasonably well on Sony but I believe there were some bokeh quality impacts from the lack of sensor stack optimization. I think along with 35/1.2 III/IV, the 35/1.5 adapts very similarly and better than the other CV 35mm VMs (35/1.7, 35/2 (Ultron & Apo-Lanthar) and 2.5, 3.5 have worse field curvature effects on Sony at least when it comes to stopped down corner-to-corner sharpness), but I still prefer the native options for the proper optimization, EXIF etc. so eventually I traded away all my CV 35mm VMs. I have all 3 of their E-mount 35mm options, including the discontinued 35/1.2 SE, in addition to Septon.
