So I have been shooting with the R1, R5ii and the 100-300 with both TC and the 24-105mm 2.8 Z for the past 8 months - 6 months of which have been here in South Africa.
So I’ve decided on want to slim down my kit and have a little more flexibility shooting more than wildlife as I will be heading to Peru, Mexico, Asia and then Greece for a wedding. I’ll be traveling for 4-5 months before I head back to South Africa.
So I am trying to decide what lenses I should switch up, as I don’t want to bring the 100-300 and the 24-105mm is bit too heavy/bulky to use daily.
Any thoughts on lenses to swap out to or any other suggests would be appreciated.
My minimal combo for a similar set of destinations & budget would be the 14-35L (or in my case the 10-20L), 24-70/2.8, 70-200Z with the 2x TC, and call it a day. That's what I just had packed for KSA and Socotra, where I'm obviously not going, and what I will have in Indonesia, Chile and once again Easter Island. I will also sprinkle specialized primes, depending on the destination - 14, 20, 50, 85 VCM will partake, obviously not all at once.

The 16-28/28-70 Combo is pretty incredible for the price/size/weight of it all if you want to stick with Zooms-
Have you also thought about shifting into a new category?
Leica Q3/Q43?
Fuji X100VI
Might be a refreshing change to use a single focal length in compact packages! I know I love them when I travel. I will say though, wildlife is not on my shooting list ever, unless a monkey is on my shoulder.

Living the dream...you, Stan and the other guys who are putting in the travel. I'm jealous I can't be there with you guys right now. Anyway, for travel like this my go to lightweight kit would be (2) R5II's, 14-35, 24vcm, 35vcm, RF 70-200 f/2.8, and 100-500. This is my lightest/simplest kit I travel with. Mostly with the 35 prime on one body, and the 70-200 on the other body. If I need something long I throw on the 100-500, or use it for video.

Haha don't tempt Robert, he'll buy everything you suggested
My travel photography kit for serious scenery/wildlife is R5, 16 2.8, 24-105 f4, 35 f1.8, 100-500, G1XIII - 8 lb
I could swap the 100-500 for a 70-200 f4 or 100-400 f8 to save 1.5 lb. I did this for Morocco but never used the 100-400.
Recently I've been experimenting with a lighter kit: R7 + Sigma 10-18 and 18-50 f2.8s, and RF-S 18-150 - 3.25 lb
Plus, maybe the RF 100-400 at an extra 1.5 lb. I use the 18-50 indoors and the 18-150 outdoors. I've tested the two 18-#s at f4 & 5.6 and found them both sharp and essentially identical IQ.
Since I've used the 24-105 focal range for so long, I'm a bit uncertain about how limiting a 28-# would be for general service. Time will tell.

I have my Q3 which I've owned now going on 2 years. As great as it is I don't find myself using it all that much.

Asia certainly is! Been going off and on for number of years for work but this time around it will be less so. Most of my time will be in Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam. How's the 200Z with the 2x TC?

Indistinguishable from the 100-500, but AF doesn't track as well fast moving birds. Works for normal things. It's my favorite solution for travel unless I'm explicitly after animals.

WoW-
I feel like its about as good as it gets for travel. Maybe mix it up and take that only on your next trip. Maybe you surprise yourself! Or maybe you regret it
I am going to Japan for 2 weeks and taking one lens/camera body only. I picked up the new Leica Noctilux and that along with the M11-P will be on me for 2 weeks there. I did something similar in Kentucky where I only took a 21mm- Actually ended up loving the pictures from that trip-
Maybe its time to dumb down the kit and see what happens. Either way good luck! sounds like you have an amzing line of trips coming.
