Fibonacci series is a series of numbers wherein each successive value is the sum of two numbers preceding it. The mathematical expression for this series was formulated by an Italian mathematician Leonardo Pisano (or Fibonacci).
This series can be found in nature in abundance, from flower petals to pine cones to sea shells to human bodies and all the way to the galaxies. I thought of this monthly assignment to be in the name of this 13th century mathematician.
Fun fact (or not so) about this series - there is another mathematical ratio called golden ratio that is closely linked to Fibonacci series. As the sequence progresses, the ratio of consecutive Fibonacci numbers converges to the golden ratio. The cereal boxes we buy are designed based on the golden ratio so that our eye catches them.
