I think your crop is perfect as it pulls them into the frame. Exposure looks good as is your focus. I would prefer to see the image processed more classically, but it looks to me like you had a vision and that vision was very well executed. I'm going to guess that guy is very happy with this photo which is really what matters.
Thanks all! I was going for this muted/de-saturated look. And this was totally a random shot... not staged or anything. I wish I could've gotten less people in the background. I did a light generative fill but find the background more distracting then I wanted. Again, a random shot and I went w/ the best shot I had.
I love the desaturated look and the composition. When doing event photography, we don’t always have control over the BG and I think your choice of DOF helped mitigate some of the distraction. Great job and worthy of Featured Thread.
Did you apply sharpening on the horse’s mane and hair just below the mane? Maybe it’s just the lighting?

No sharpening on the mane... it was the sunlight bouncing off it. I can try and improve that area next time.

Thanks for the nice comments and tips!
Honestly, the only reason I brought up sharpening, is I tend to go overboard with the sharpen brush at times. Since it’s sunlight, it’s probably best to leave it as is. It’s a great image and your processing enhances the cowboy’s character.
