I realize David83 has set the bar ridiculously high for these types of shots. Nevertheless, here's my take on 16 hours spent over a day and a half on the river. I totally missed any dive shots and came away with a whole new appreciation for those of you who can do this well. Shot with the OM-1 ll and Olympus 100-400 V1. Thanks for taking a look !

Thanks Chris. The gear did fine, but my tracking skills are lacking I had opportunities for some dive shots but I just couldn't follow the bird all the way to the strike.
All great catches, but the set could have used some editing, both to tell a story and to highlight the best images. It is harder to distinguish what is happening in the images with the bird set against the water, as opposed to rocks or the land. I think 3 and 6 from your first post, and 1 from the second, tell the whole story.
All that being said, great tracking and captures.

These are great, Gary! You did a great job of capturing the action - dive shot or no dive shot. For me dive shots are pure luck -- and usually my luck stinks.
If I had to pick a favorite from this wonderful set, it would probably be #7 -- I love everything about that image. You make that OM-1 Mkll/100-400mm combo sing!
Nice work!
I like #2 the best. I love it when they look straight tat you! It looks like there was great action while you were there. We went down las night and I didn’t see a single bird. Not pitched, not flying, nothing. Must’ve been a meeting somewhere else lol..

Thanks very much. Not sure I follow about "the bird set against water" but I appreciate you taking the time to provide your input.

That's one of my favorites also. One of the last shots after an 12 hour day Thanks Greg

Wow, that's hard to imagine. There were definitely some slow periods during the day but overall I was very pleased with the action. I got there Tuesday at 7 AM and stayed till 7 PM. As per usual, what might have been my best opportunity for a close, head on shot happened just as I was packing up to leave Appreciate your input Dave !
Sorry, Gary,I was unclear. For images such as 4,5, 7, and 12, the water background has turbulence and is not sufficiently blurred to place the emphasis on the bird and catch vs. bird, catch, and background. As I said, these are all great catches, but the I try to cull ruthlessly to share only the best of the best.
I'll be posting some soon from a recent trip to Florida so you can return the favor!
