In a similar situation and just came back to this hobby. Reading through this thread gave me a lot of information. Have you decided whether to go with Q3 43 yet?

So, I took the leap. When I woke up too early this morning, I looked in the buy-sell and found a Q3 43 in pristine condition with a very low shutter count and pristine body from an outstanding seller. It also came with a ton of accessories, including every one I would have bought or wanted to buy myself--Leica usb c power pack with extra battery, the small rig grip, which is the one I wanted, b&w filter, lcd cover, a choice (!) of thumb grips and a range of hoods, including the polar pro flip hood, etc., etc.

So after a second cup of coffee to make sure I wasn't being impulsive, I took the leap. Great seller. Good price. Everything there from the original sale from an authorized dealer. Plus more.

I am sure I will have fun with this, one way or another. The question, I believe, will be how it is a different or the same experience as the A7C R. I think it could go either way, and there is no pre-experiential right answer. I assume some things will be better or worse on each camera, and the shooting experience is what will matter. It's still under warranty.

It arrives in a couple of days. I'll see how it is as a family documentary camera and for scenes that are just pleasing (think Bernard Plossu, whose work I just discovered, for my aspirations) by the weekend.

And I'll compare to my A7C R and also to my old, beloved, right-sized A9 with either the small Sigma 45/2.8 or the adapted Canon EF 50mm f1.2L

Congratulations on the new camera. I hope your taking the risk brings you many years of wonderful photography. The Leica cameras that set the stage for all modern photography was actually based on taking risk when Ernst Leitz famously said, "My decision is final. We will take the risk." And began the production of the camera and built the company that became Leica.

That is a great quote that might be well-used in a variety of situations. And thank you for the good wishes--I'm looking forward to the experience.

Yes, and today they don't even dare to install an EVF with innovative focusing aids in their revolutionary manual focus icon, the M EV. Instead, they're reaching into the parts bin and even installing the old processor to keep the investment in this "test balloon" as low as possible and the profit margin as high as possible. These days, they prefer to pour that money into marketing and lavish events for influencers. How times change. The good Ernst would probably be turning in his grave.

No, that's the difference between head and heart. Is anything I've written not true?

Honestly NiftyFifty you have told us how unhappy you are with your current life circumstances including how they are negatively affecting your beloved photography hobby. Even forcing you to use equipment you don't like. We are all sympathetic and really hope things get better for you. But you don't really need to interject your misery into so many threads with negative posts like this one.

The EV-1 which I happened to test pre-release is not my choice, and clearly not yours either. But it has filled a need for many, and is selling very well for Leica. Despite your feelings on the camera, it is a desired and viable product which is gaining a good following.

Think positive and life most often follows. I also suffer restrictions on my life that are severe as anyone who knows me personally has seen. Despite this, I have vowed to never have a bad day. There are too few days in our lives to waste even one.

We only know two things in this World for sure.

We will all be dead soon.

Then we will be dead a very long time.

We must cherish and enjoy what we have in this life.

It's always the same old story. When you don't have any arguments, you try to make it personal. The problem is, I'm not falling for that. And here's the question for you: Which of the things I wrote isn't true?
Just list Leica's innovations of the last few decades for me.

I and many here would rather not engage is such bitterness. We would rather rejoice in the new adventure in photography that a fellow member is sharing with us.

Yes, my post was personal. It was a personal attempt to offer you encouragement to find happiness not to argue with you.

There's hardly anything in life I value as much as humor and laughter, especially laughter at oneself and one's weaknesses. I certainly enjoy the weaknesses of others also, but if I had approached the matter from that angle, it would have only caused more trouble. 😄

Congrats on your new toy. I hope it works out as you wish. I am sure it’ll be different to your A7CR. I often carry one of each with the A7CR strapped to a SIgma 90mm DGDN. I really want a Q3-90. A 2.8 would be fine. I use the Sony until that happens.

While I’m sure the AF on the Sony is still (a bit) better than the Q3-43 the Sony is limited in the same way by the sensor. And the new firmware for the Leica means that in the field there’s no functional difference in the autofocus. The A7CR battery life is a bit better.

Everything else feels better on the Leica. You’re getting an IP rated camera (as long as a filter is used). It’s vastly better built than the Sony. The shutter and EVF are just so much nicer than the Sony. You’l never need electronic shutter on the Q because it’s so quiet anyway.

Experiment with the accessories you got. In the ned I got rid of everything except a third party thumbgrip. My wife, K, loves the front grip. It’s a camera you can personalise to your taste.

The Q’s are lovely and I really hope it works out for you. Beware though. They are the gateway drug into Leica. Lot’s of people think they can stop at one. Most don’t. Steve (#1bwana1)will back me up on that.

Gordon

Thank you, guys. The idea of Leica has always appealed to me--a small, high quality, simple to operate and direct camera that can be discreet and quick. But AF and stabilization have been so important in my photo technique and choice of subject that I didn't want to forgo them. That's why I canceled my preordered Sony RX1R III when I discovered it wasn't stabilized.

I am excited to try the Q3 and 43mm is my preferred focal length--I am almost always between 35 and 55 fov. I'll see if it retains for me enough of what I imagine to be the Leica experience.

And maybe at some point I'll hold an M for a few minutes.

I haven’t read the whole thread, but this sounds like a great outcome to me. And encouraging that it didn’t need three cups of coffee. Good for you! I agree with what others have said, I’m sure it will give you a lot of pleasure.

(And Gordon is also correct, that this could be the thin end of the wedge …. )

Technically, she has 5 more days to change her mind. So thanks, in advance.
