p.1 #1 · Nikon 24-70 f2.8 S V1 durability compared to V2?

Has anyone else found that the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 S V1 is not very durable? I have owned a few copies, and they all had a surprising amount of play on the front zoom barrel.

I gave it a pretty hard knock on the front when I was abroad, enough to dent the filter a little bit, and the zoom ring developed a noticeable amount of resistance around 24mm. Thankfully I was in Seoul, and they have an official Nikon service center there and I was able to get it repaired in just a day for a lot less than if this had happened in the US. This is exactly why I stayed away from the 24-70 f2.8G f-mount because it seemed like every copy I had developed zoom ring resistance/grittiness, so I'm probably not going to keep it much longer.

Is the V2 24-70 f2.8 S any better when it comes to durability? I'm guessing it would be being that it has an internal zoom.

I have the said S lens and have zero issues with it.

My VI is still as good as the day I purchased it. However, I also have the VII and the fact that it is internal zooming should mean less possible issues due to it being less vulnerable. How this actually plays out in the real world is another story.

I've had my V1 24-70 f2.8 S for a few years now and have had zero issues.

Thanks all. Good to hear it's been holding up for you. I'm still on the fence on keeping it. The 35-150 Tamron feels like a better fit for me, but I am a little wary of 3rd party lenses

The V2 looks like dynamite, not least with IF and internal zoom. It has to be more robust with that construction, right? Meanwhile, the smaller Z 24-70/4S is serving nicely—I basically waited a lifetime for this dream lens to be created just for me. Thank you, Nikon!

I agree, the 24-70 f4 S is great. I have the excellent 24-120 f4 for when f4 is suitable, but I do love a good 24-70 f2.8 in the bag for when I need that extra stop of light, for on set stills and events.

I decided not to go with the 35-150 because it tends to lose contrast more in backlit conditions than Nikon 24-70 f2.8. Selling on my V1, and just going to be patient and wait for a used copy of the 24-70 f2.8 mk2 to pop up.
