About to purchase the viltrox 2x tc and I was wondering if any1 uses it with the 70-200 gmii for birding. Thinking it could be a really nice compact and light alternative to my heavy sigma 300-600 if i intend to hike primarily over birding just incase i see something interesting.

2x TC will slow down AF noticeably. I never use a 2x TC with any zoom no matter how good the bare lens is. Stick to the 1.4x and you'll be stoked. For hiking the Tamron 50-400 is great and pretty light at around 1.1kg and way cheaper than Sony GM.

TCs are tricky because if the sensor has unlimited resolution (or at least somewhat higher resolution than the lens) then you will get better results shooting without the TC.
The third party TC is going to cap your fps which isn’t a good idea when it comes to fast moving subjects

I often use my 70-200GMII in the garden with the 2x for birds or flowers. It works but it's not an amazing solution. Image quality mostly holds up but it does slow down AF and you do see spherical aberration.

My experience says 2xTC is very good with GM 300/2.8,but not so with GM 70-200/2.8 Mk2.To get decent sharpness across the frame it should be stopped 1f stop more,so effectively you end up with 140-400/f11 zoom with only OK IQ and rather slow AF.Better get GM 100-400/4.5-5.6 (Mk1) instead, which surpasses the above combination in all most important respects.Good copy of G 70-300f4.5-5.6 isn't bad either.

Yeah thats what I figured regarding sensor resolution. Btw the viltrox tc does not limit fps for native sony lens, it works just as good if not better than the sony 2x according to most people.
