I don't normally do a post with this many images, but I wanted to share the day I got to be a part of delivering bicycles to children in a remote Arctic village last summer while aboard the CCG Sir Wilfrid Laurier. There is my goal in this project to do as much as I can with my own hands. This includes processing the film and scanning. I also want to use an entirely Leica workflow. I know this is mostly irrelevant to the images, but I want to do it that way for personal reasons. I scan using a Leica SL3 body, and a Leica APO-SL lens using an extension tube to get 1:1 scanning. It produces superb quality images.

So you came up with such a beautiful analog project, and then you stop halfway through and digitize the whole thing? As a Leica enthusiast, I'd recommend a Focomat IIc (of course, a V35 will also work with 135 film, but it doesn't warm heart and soul in the same way). I guarantee you'd get goosebumps just looking at it, even before you've laid a hand on the machine. A baryta print, even if it's not technically perfect (in which case it might even be exceptional), would suit your idea a thousand times better and would have a completely different emotional value. I'd seriously consider it. Of course, there are labs that do it if necessary, but I think there's nothing like working with your own two hands.

Well, been there done that but I was using a Focomat V35. And as much as I like shooting film, I've never been fond of the darkroom. Maybe because I'm not good at it, lack patience, etc.

To me, it is not analog vs digital but about the result and a well-scanned film printed on my QuadtoneRip driven Epson gives me better pictures.

Of course, this is a matter of taste and a friend of mine does both: Hasselblad scanner, Piezo, the works... And baryta prints.

I've given up arguing about analog vs. digital; everyone should decide that for themselves. I just think that this project, which I find genuinely exciting, will only truly come together if it's carried out entirely analog, ideally with older equipment. This was just meant to be a suggestion, nothing more.

I like these images Steve, they truly look like they could have been taken when the IIIf was brand new. Timeless!

Here's one I took with my IIIb that I quite like for the same reason. Maybe not 1930's but definitely hard to pinpoint a date.

Love It!

Here are two more images from my testing of the Leica IIIf and 5CM Summaron f/3.5 I did before sending it off for CLA and new shutter fabric.

These are still from cheap low resolution jpeg scans for the lab. I will re-scan once the Valoi-35 kit gets here. I expect to make 60mpx DNG files from now on. My Leica IIIf is supposed to be ready by end of this week, but this is Italy and time has a different meaning here.

I will be traveling to Milano on Friday then on to the Lake District up North for

I understand what you are saying and appreciate the comment. In so many ways you are absolutely correct.

For me, in this case, wanting to work from my own scans and DNG files is about more things than just resolution, although that will be important as the galleries that will display the work often want large images.

When the lab here does the scans they return low resolution jpegs. I find that jpeg processing the way they are doing it changes the grain in the image in a way that I find too rough and angular. Their modern esthetic for sharpness damages

Thanks for taking the time to view the images, think about the project, and contribute your point of view. As always appreciated.

The way I envision my project also includes how the modern life here is so well integrated in the historical component in this place. There is a vibrant contemporary arts, science, education, living, immigration, and other current components that are exciting and very much a part this place and part of my vision and of my story. I have posted many images taken digitally here. I am using the M11, the SL3 and many contemporary best in class modern lenses for this component of the story. I believe these also it fits well in my vision.

I have posted many of these images here on FM. Take a look at my uploads gallery to see some. When looking at them realize that our fellow FM members through their own posted images, their comments, and support, have been a great inspiration and educational tool for me. I am grateful for this. I hope that they can recognize some of those contributions in the images.

Nifty Fifty it sounds like you have developed a very strong personal esthetic in your photography. I am sure many here would enjoy and benefit from your images if you ever decide to start sharing them here on FM. I know I would.

Better that that, pack the dog in a crate, come stay and we'll make some images together. Free room and board for the both of you. Italians love dogs and kids! I could benefit greatly from you knowledge and esthetic as I explore more deeply shooting film.

My current long term project here in Parma will have a B&W component. I am shooting in an environment, a way of dressing, and a culture that survives today as it did back in the B&W film photography era. I have decided to actually use a 75 year old camera and lenses to capture that esthetic and emotion. I want to capture that historical connection that the Italians have worked so hard to preserve so well here in my story. It has proven fun, and is being well received.

I understood that you wanted to capture the past that can still be found in the present day, and for that purpose, you wanted to use an old camera with an old lens, and preferably a film that doesn't look particularly modern, in a truly authentic way. That sounds very exciting to me, as I've always been very drawn to analog black and white photography (especially amateur photography) from the first half of the last century. Well, and in my personal opinion, such a project would be even more appealing and valuable if it were done entirely analog. You don't have to share this view, of course; I just wanted to offer some food for thought. By the way, I envy you the great fortune of living in a city that offers you such subjects. In Berlin, one is primarily surrounded by dirt and ugliness.

1bwana1 wrote:

Those are strong words. How did you arrive at that conclusion? What statements I made led you to this impression? I consider myself a simple amateur photographer who loves the traditional craft of black and white darkroom work, but unfortunately hasn't been able to pursue it for several years due to lack of space. Therefore, I only occasionally reach for my unloved digital camera to capture trivialities, small (to me) seemingly timeless things in the sea of ugliness that is the modern world. Basically, for me, the digital camera serves the same purpose as a dog does for many couch potatoes: it encourages me to move around more. I will never love this digital stuff, neither the equipment nor the pictures.

1bwana1 wrote:

I doubt that. I occasionally post a few digital images in the lens threads, and that's enough. If the topic of analog photography comes up in any discussion, I might snap an old print to support a point, or post a positive scan if I have something suitable. Since you're obviously trying your hand at street photography, you definitely won't benefit from this, because I've never done street photography. But so you don't go away empty-handed, here's an old scan of an print. The picture was taken spontaneously during one of my very few vacations. A nice memory. I don't expect more from a photo. Does it convey my "very strong personal esthetic"? I don't know.
