I agree that many folks viewing low res web images/prints wouldn't know which lens the images came from.
However, one lens can more easily net satisfactory and more consistent results, has a wider range of usability (focal length and shutter speeds), and provides the user with a more enjoyable operator experience (balance, functionality, IS/IBIS).
some folks like those things too i think.
another thing is that some folks keep their equipment for a long period of time. the cost difference between two items, spread over a long period of time, is pretty minor.
