I was thinking of buying the 35mm 1.4m GM to pair with my 50mm 1.2 Gm.. but just discovered this camera and I am dying to get this one instead. Best 35mm rendering I've ever seen, beautiful images.

Indeed, it is a great lens...and a very good camera as well. Given the age of even the most recent RX1Rii, you can generally get them for a very good price too.

I use my 35 GM less now but today I used both. GM is feeling neglected.

A few images from a recent visit to the de Young Museum in San Francisco, including both its permanent collection and the Kehinde Wiley "An Archaeology of Silence" exhibit.
The RX1Rii was fantastic, even at ISO 5000 and very challenging lighting and color conditions. I am not sure that the a1 would have even done as well.

It's a superb device, the RX1. I had some issues on the old thread, so this one represents a fresh start.
#1 This is the 600 year old Gyantse Kumbum in Tibet. The guy bottom left adds scale to the 35 metre structure. Many such chortens were built in antiquity. King Kanishka constructed a similar 120 metre tall edifice in the early second century AD, in present day Peshawar (then known as Gandhara). #2 Communal lunch at Phuntsoling Monastery, complete with blue sheep (pets), dogs, monks and a funeral party in the background.

We used to wonder if/when Sony would produce one or more longer versions of the RX1 series, as they clearly put so much effort into the 35mm camera. It would only steal sales from their emerging a7 lens ranges, but consider a 35-50-75 set. It would have been a great travel kit, delivering excellent quality at under 1500 grams all up. Some people still think the 'market' decides, rather than the industry players.

I always liked the dramatic look the Sonnar delivered at very low EVs. The leaf shutter made the camera perfect for stealth work, but paradoxically the small body was susceptible to poor or rushed shot-making technique. I generally stick with 1/50s as a working minimum exposure. ISO is very personal, but I'll note that these early sensors still approximate the dynamic range of the latest Sony a7r series models. Gains have only been incremental at high ISO while ISO 100 is a near overlay. The later RX1rII still sells at B&H for an eye-watering $3300.

The RX1 is still a perfect companion for long hikes. Finnmark, Northern Norway:
Nice photos, and I especially appreciate them as there's a good chance I'll be going to Kirkenes in October for a meeting and was thinking we'd take a few days to drive to Tromsų after and do some exploring along the way.
